of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doing
household chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week.

关于为什么不选D，很多人给出的解释是，compared with修饰的是主句的主语，造成修饰歧义。但是下面这题和该题基本上是一样的，却用了compared with，该怎么解释呢？

PREP 108.

In the United States, while the number of foreign-born residents and their children is higher than ever, the percentage of the population they represent is not; in 1910 this group made up 35 percent of the population when compared to 20 percent in 2000.

(A) population when compared to 20 percent in 2000

(B) population as compared to 2000, when it was 20 percent

(C) population, comparing it with 20 percent in 2000

(D) population, unlike 2000, with 20 percent

(E) population, compared with 20 percent in 2000

我觉得compared with a figure 我觉得不好。要是和figure比较的话，那比较对象也一定要是figure，但是第一句前面没有figure，而是描述了一个现象。这个现象就是：children spent an average
of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doing
household chores。

two and a half hours a week就是figure啊，答案里面不也是用到了figure

我觉得下面那题是可以比较的是2个百分比的比较啊，当然可以用compared with

上面一道D比较双方不对等，chores compared with figure...

是这样理解的，其实大家认为，COMPARED放在句末，逻辑主语是前面句子主语，这个论断是错误的，其实OG里面都是说它的逻辑主语是与它最近的那个词，相当于省略了which is，那么第一个题目的D就错了，变成家务和数据比了，而且即使你认为是那个时间和后面的数据比，也不对，为什么还要加个the figure of 呢？wordy。而第二题，compared with则很明确在对比两个数据。

PS：其实我一直在研究GMAT中的which/that的具体指代对象，我发现它很不确定，总共有两种指代方法，一个是最近的名词，还有个是句子中的某一成分。。。我始终无法得出个结论。。。因为GMAT中的题目，一下是指代最近的名词，一下是指代某一成分。。。

正解! D错在拿chores和figure of 6 hours在比。看到忍不住要顶起~~

看到很多以前的贴说是拿figure在和children比，这是对compared with用法的误解和对“过去分词的逻辑主语是主句主语”的迷信！
