The program offers a large number of electives. I was looking for courses in Finance, and I was able to complete seven courses (41% of the courses) in Finance and Accounting. Most other programs have a set curriculum with a minimal number of electives.
Belmont did an excellent job of fostering community among the students--they also did a great job of making classes and events very convenient for working students.作者: s 时间: 2010-10-15 17:24
Many of the faculty came from the business world before they decided to become professors. They have real world, applicable experience to bring to the classroom, not just theories and what they've read in books or observed.
I would have liked more flexibility for students that might have to miss class because a business trip conflicted with the class schedule. For example, if a student misses two classes, they are penalized a letter grade. The school should offer additional work for students or not penalize them for tending to their business responsibilities.作者: s 时间: 2010-10-15 17:24
The nature of Belmont's approach to education makes the Massey Graduate School of Business classroom experience rather intimate and personal. I always felt like my faculty members knew my name and were interested in seeing me succeed.
Perhaps my favorite feature of the Massey MBA at Belmont is the fact that as an alum we can audit classes (for free!) for personal/professional development and additional skill set acquisition even after we've graduated. This is a tremendous benefit because it allows students to circle back and benefit from some classes they may not have been able to take during their particular program.作者: s 时间: 2010-10-15 17:25
The difficult thing about the structure of Belmont's MBA program is that the classes are two credits versus three, and are split between a ten week and five week session. For some of the more intensive and analytical core and elective classes--such as Finance or Operations--these should definitely be a full semester (16 weeks) in order to allow the students to absorb the material a bit more. You learn a lot during the 10 weeks, but would like to learn even more for these key classes over a 16 week period.
I would have liked more guidance/support from the Professional Development Center (Career Center). While ours is great, the resource is split between undergraduate and graduate. Some more direct (or visible) interaction with employers through career fairs, vendor fairs, etc., would be great.作者: s 时间: 2010-10-15 17:25
The Massey School is still small enough that the faculty know you and work closely with each other. They value student input and as a student you can see evidence of curricula being improved through technology, innovation, and student feedback.
I am not a great fan of group work so I would have liked less of that. I realize that they are preparing us to work with diverse groups in the workplace and to work together under deadlines so this may just be a matter of personal preference.作者: s 时间: 2010-10-15 17:25
One of the most unexpected gifts of the program was that I have become a better writer. Jack Massey, our founder and benefactor, placed a strong emphasis on written communication and the professors have carried out that part of the educational mission faithfully.
More social events (cookouts, snacks before class, informal networking events) could have helped us have a sense of community. Part-time programs are challenged to have a sense of community, since we all have full time jobs and most have families. The "free time" of a full time student is absent in our situation.
