D. attempt to try and metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritating it.

E. attempt to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant.

这道题用排除法，排除trying, trying that, attempt to try很显然选E。但是小女子不才，怎么也分析不出来最后的the chemical irritant是做什么用的，请教各位大牛，帮忙分析下句子成分。

只是还不太明白这句话什么意思，也估计是我太较真了，每次都想把句子读懂。

我认为or render harmless是插入语，这样就好理解了，不过这样的插入语，还真的没有怎么见过

我认为是the chemical irritant是metabolize和render 的宾语

render 为动词, 正确顺序是 render the chemical harmless 吧
