问题太多了，还好有所准备。不过进程很快，35分钟结束。总结起来，大概是自己比较会忽悠老外吧...唉

迟来的Maryland Smith MBA面经 (3/11) + Skype面试一点体会

3月11号晚上11点skype面的，面试人是Suzanne Ashour，associate director。
问题比较多。我回答的时候，她一直在记笔记，但时不时会看看我的表情。

以下是面试的问题：

why smith（没问why mba）
short- and long-term goal（这里还特别问我毕业后如果在美国找不到工作，是不是愿意回国。我当然说愿意啦，她听完感觉很满意的样子。。。）
what can you contribute to smith?
how do you handle conflicts
give an example that how you dealt with a tough person in your team?
give an example that how you got feedback from others, why chose that person?
leadership experience
how did you learn from a failure?
give an example when you did not have enough resources to achieve your goal?
is there anything else you want to share with me?

个人经验：

经历了3次skype面试，我基本上都是看着电脑屏幕回答问题的。尽量保持一个轻松，自信的状态，即使面试官和我没有什么互动，我也会尽力把自己的故事讲的生动一些，并且辅助一些面部表情的变化，呵呵。

时间45分钟。悲剧了4次以后，最近终于开始收获。所以胜利总在坚持之后。祝所有大家都能如愿以偿。

U of Maryland (UMD) Smith MBA SKype面试

这应该是我2010申请的最后一个面试了，今天早上3点钟。
面试官是一个mm,大概是华人，挺pp的。
问题很多，我觉得我很多答得不好的。基本无互动，就是我不停地说，她不停地记。一共大概不到50分钟，我口干舌燥的，也不敢喝水（她一直在喝）。好累啊！
中间连接很不好，大概重连了两三次，不过一直不清楚。后来我还特意放慢速度，而且加大音量（更累了）。我面之前还想呢，半夜3点，应该网速很好。没想到很差，比上次跟Pitt U晚上10点还差。真奇怪，不知道是不是很多人在下载。

大概一共问了我10多个问题吧。

3. what you can contribute to smith school
4. give an example about how you dealt with a difficult person
5. give an example of getting feedbacks from others...why did you choose that person
6. how do you encourage your team
7. what would you do if you have a team member who is not contributing (就是有人偷懒啊什么的不干活怎么办)
8. give an example when you persist on sth, when you had failures/setback at first and finally succeeded
9. give an example when you did not have resources to achieve your goal
10. how do you handle conflicts
11. what resources you want to use in Smith school, such as clubs
轮到我问问题的时候我已经没有力气了。就随便问了一两个。
然后她就很nice地说不早了，你也该睡会儿了。然后留了个email,还说keep in touch.
不过我后来就睡不着了，失眠了，一直躺到天亮。

之前看面经说Smith的面试官面之前是看过资料的。不过关于我的，几乎就是blind.完全没有问简历或者essay上的任何问题。大概是在没什么值得问的了吧

Onsite interview with Smith, Maryland

Thanks for this website, I couldn't prepare myself better without it. So here I am, sharing me experience and I hope it could help others at needs.

There is no small talks in the beginning either, the first question: what do you like and dislike about your job? ( I was prepared for some small talk first, I guess I was too relaxed about things. )

Standard questions:

Why Smith?

What do you see yourself in 10 years?

If you has to pick one strength that makes Smith accept you, what is going to be?


Almost 90% of the question are team or leadership based. I ran out of examples after two questions, so I recommendated everyone try to prepare teamwork questions as many as possble.

How do you solve conflict in teams?  

Example about how you influence a team?

What is your leadership style?

what do you consider your biggest accomplishment?

Tough questions: an example when you ask feedback from someone

If you have to fire someone, would you do it? How would you make that decision?


Overall, I think I did a 6 of out 10. I showed him that I did a lot of research about the school, but I felt that I did pretty aweful in some of the team questions because running out of examples. There is really no suprised question, so my advice to everyone is: know your story and practise, practise, practise!

Eventually I got the offer from the school and one year scholarship just a couple of days ago.

Maryland Smith 面筋

今天凌晨三点半打来了，因为这个时间是我状态最好的时候(joke)其实是当时半个多月前预约的时候已经没有很好的时间了，这一轮decision day是2/15,所以就跳了个最早的时间面掉。面试的MM很nice,问了问今天工作忙不忙阿累不累啊，然后就奔主题了：

1 introduce yourself问了些简历上的东西

2 why now (顺便我一口气把why mba, career goal都说了）

3 why smith（针对essay里写的问的，要我详细展开一下）

4 clubs and contributions you can make（也是针对essay里写的问,看来把我essay看得很熟。。。）

5 how would your family and friends describe you

6 Q&A

半夜里夜深人静的，反而感觉特别兴奋，很talktive的说,半个小时始终保持很快的语速。最后讲完我跟她说我们这里凌晨四点了，成功把她shock到了整体感觉还不错，但愿给offer的话能多给点scholarship...

谈话很随意，个人感觉比较轻松，面试者也比较客气；

   
唯一需要注意的是：面试者肯定是看过我整个application
package的，所以会直接拿essay中的细节来追问。
另外上来第一个问题有点出人意料...呵呵。

In this question, the interviewer asked me why I switched my job from big company to a small company.


Leadership experience
About leadership, he extend a premised question. What kind of your boss's characters do you dislike?


On the basis of previous question, he also aske some premised questions. Such as , if the person you dislike is your boss, how will you do?


Case questions
He asked me if I am Starbucks GM in certain place, how will I expand the market share in remote place?
We had a lot of discussion about marketing strategies. The interviwer will ask you many " why" and " how "


One minute to promote your favorite movie to the interviewer


Who is your role model? and why?


What is your strength and weakness?
Case interview is very special because I had never thoughtthose question until I was asked.

Maryland, Smith MBA Phone Interview Experience

Today I had a phone interview with a lady of U of Maryland. The interview only took about 20 min. questions were:

why MBA,
why UM,
why now as usual
a situation facing an ethic challenge
a situation in professional life where you have to make a tough decision
that is all. even did not let me ask question. Good sign or bad sign? Really wants to go to this school though. Praying....

感觉不好，因为在网站上已经更新了联系电话，可是学校没有自动更新，打到原来的电话。自然是找不到我，而我又在另一部电话旁干等。知道学校打错后马上邮件联系对方再打过来。

收到invitation interview预约就只剩下3月的安排，而decision deadline是3月15日，当时出现这个状况思绪就有点乱，担心会错过面试，后来再次打过来时心情还没完全平静下来，夹杂紧张和慌乱，本来就不太好的口语更加显得笨拙，虽然面试官感觉还是比较nice的。。。

还有一些闲聊的，反正之前准备的tell yourself, teamwork, leadership, conflict case 都没有问到，预约安排是一个小时的时间用来面试，前面折腾就去了半小时，真正面试只有将近20分钟，唉，看来希望不大了……  现在回想当时应该要求重新预约面试时间的，真失策！  

昨天面试了一下.admin officer是位lady,非常nice,对我的背景表现出了强烈的兴趣.(我phD正在毕业,是biomed方面的).我觉的是她在向我推销这个学校.

气氛较好,我有些放松警惕.犯了个错误,给她的印象是可能她觉的我在选校,不一定会把smith放在首选.

开车1小时到家后,在琢磨了一下.觉得自己太放松了.

然后写了thank you notes,重申我对她们学校的强烈兴趣.

她回了一较长信,介绍了很多有用的申请经验和具体的实例,some of them open up my mind.

我的教训:

1.interview就向求爱,不管对方怎么说,就是要非你不嫁.

2 不关气氛多轻松,不能放松.

我要尽量弥补这个错误.在lab里呆久了,有点儿呆傻了.而且business attire令我感觉也不太好.不象在中国的时候了,现在在Hilton里座着觉的自己不属于这里.

需要适应.

Smith (Maryland) Student taking questions


小弟我在这献丑了，没有向top 10的NN们挑战的意思。只是去年此时申请的时候得到过很多朋友的热心帮助，所以现在回答一些自己力所能及的问题，也算是对大家的一个回报。

Who should apply Maryland?              

Smith 绝对不适合那些在国内已经拥有良好工作背景（MC,IB)或者GMAT超高的大牛。但是如果你毕业于国内普通院校，工作背景一般，GMAT也没有超高，但却仍然抱着来美国读MBA的梦想，我建议你可以考虑Maryland. Maryland的一个优点就是financial aid比较慷慨，今年几乎所有的中国大陆学生都有各种各样的fellowship, scholarship，GA，所以如果你没有砸锅卖铁，举债读一个top school的勇气和决心，Maryland也不失为一个不错的选择。要知道一旦美国经济不景气，top school的找工作一样很难，那一身债务将成为巨大的负担。Maryland的另一个优点是其地理位置，说是Maryland Univeristy,但College Park的校园紧邻DC,坐地铁就能前往。前往纽约，费城也可以搭乘DC的长途汽车，DC的机场也可以搭地铁到达。选择商学院，特别是非top school,千万不要小看交通优势，因为你会有大量时间花在networking和career fair上，我就曾经几次前往费城参加career和networking event,在一些中西部的学校这就比较困难了。

Career Perspective

我目前在寻找明年的summer internship，和top school的学生比较的确非常困难。但是我相信所有的15名以外的学校都是一样的，除了靠学校自己的career office的信息，都要靠自己去寻找机会。

2005年毕业的大陆学生，据我所知绝大多数都找到了工作，而且想留在美国的都留在了美国。有一位回大陆的也在一家合资基金公司谋得了不错的职位，另有一位去了香港的一家欧资投行。而目前的二年级学生今年的暑期实习虽说参差不齐，但也不乏亮点，有去著名的投资银行和基金管理公司实习的，也有在一些小型公司实习的。总之，来Maryland以后的感受充分验证了一句话，Magic Eleven以外的学校，找工作特别是找好工作都要靠自己努力。

分享Maryland Smith interview 经验



我是预约2/3晚上10:00的phone interview，怀着忐忑不安的心情等到了10:07，觉得不太对劲，直觉可能是预约错误了，赶紧找出确认信的内容，一看，心凉了一截，因为confirmation letter上面写着是meet with an admission committee member，我该不会把预约的型态弄错了啊，赶紧拟了一封道歉信，已经写完了，此时10:15，突然电话想起，该不会是招生办的人打电话来骂人吧!!








结果打来的是一个二年级的学生，由于我已经惊吓过度了，所以刚开始他自我介绍的时候，我根本没听清，呼噜呼噜地知道他也是国际学生，然后他开始跟我说，放轻松一点，不要紧张，就当作是聊天这样就行了。








整个面试的过程很轻松，这位GG也很热心地介绍马里兰的环境和他个人的经验，因为整个interview的进行是像聊天一般，所以我就把被问到的题目总结一下﹔

由于过程根本像是聊天，所以我就会在他回答或说明的时候，去追问问题，这位GG也都很热心地回答，整个interview大概持续了45分钟，是目前我做过最长的interview。
