His studies of ice-polished rocks in his Alpine homeland, far outside the range of presnet-day glaciers, led Louis Agassiz in 1837 （to propose the concept of an age in which great ice sheet existed in what are now temperate areas.）

这个句子是正确的，我不太明白括号里部分的句子结构。concept of 后面的部分都是concept的内容，an age是in which这个定语从句的中心词对吧？ in what are now temperate areas是对前面的哪部分做说明？ age? ice sheet? 我总觉得如果简化一下括号里的部分就变成了 to propose the concept of age ....in what are now temperate areas. age不可能变成areas的吧？！所以万分疑惑，这个in what are now temperate areas到底修饰说明哪一部分呢？

那么这个句子该如何翻译呢尤其是age
