Nestled in the mountains of central New Hampshire, Dartmouth College is one of six members of the Ivy League with top-ranked MBA programs. The school, located in Hanover, was founded in 1769 and its business school opened its doors just over a century ago, in 1900. The Tuck School of Business prides itself on being a model for many of today's top U.S. business programs.
Unlike many business schools, Tuck offers only one business degree—the full-time MBA. But students can pursue dual degrees at some of Dartmouth's other schools, including the Dartmouth Medical School. At 32 weeks, Tuck's core curriculum is longer than that of most business schools, but that doesn't hinder the program's flexibility or graduates' success: MBA students graduate with an average annual base salary of $110,000.
The Amos Tuck School of Business, formerly the Amos Tuck School of Administration and Finance, is the nation's first graduate school of management. It was founded in 1900 when Edward Tuck donated 1,700 shares of Great Northern Railway Company of Minnesota stock to get the school started. A year later, Tuck gave the school $100,000 and followed up with an additional $500,000 in 1929.
Tuck, who named the school in memory of his father, graduated from Dartmouth in 1862 and worked in banking and railroad investment. Tuck's father was a founding member of the Republican Party. He, too, had graduated from Dartmouth.
Students at Tuck learn from renowned professors both in and out of the classroom. Dartmouth has a low student-to-faculty ratio—there are 45 full-time faculty members and about 240 students. The school is expected to add even more faculty as part of the Tuck 2012 five-year strategic plan.
Aside from teaching, professors publish their own articles, books, and other research. Some also do consulting work for corporations. Despite their off-campus pursuits, students say Tuck professors are available to meet with them outside the classroom.
Tuck's small student body gives students the chance to connect with both professors and their peers. Students at Tuck are encouraged to work together to create a community built around camaraderie and participation. The students are competitive and driven, but that doesn't prevent cooperation and teamwork. They also bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the classroom: On average, Tuck MBA students are 29 years old and have more than five years of work experience. Average GMAT score? An impressive 712.
Over 900 companies in major industries have active recruiting relationships with Tuck and come to the school to conduct on-campus interviews. Top recruiters include McKinsey, Bain, and the Boston Consulting Group. The average base salary typically is about $110,000, with 36% of graduates taking jobs in consulting and 35% in financial or accounting services.
Although most single students live on campus, those with partners (44%) or families usually live in Dartmouth housing at Sachem Village or in nearby apartments and houses. The Tuck community welcomes students' partners into the community through the "Tuck Partners " program.
The school supports students and their families in everything from moving to Hanover, N.H., to finding day care for the kids. While prospective students are interviewing at Tuck, their partners can meet with current Tuck partners to learn about the community.
More than 35% of Tuck students and a third of its faculty are from outside the U.S. Minorities account for 17% of the class of 2010, which is 33% female.
The annual Tuck Diversity Conference, which began in 1994, gives prospective students a chance to learn more about the school and its diversity from current students, alumni, and faculty.
Tuck aims to give its students a strong global perspective. The Global Consultancy takes students around the world—from the mountains of Nepal to Warsaw's old quarter. Students working with more than 70 global organizations have completed over 100 consultancies in over 50 countries. Among the Global Consultancy's clients are Eli Lilly (LLY), Remy-Cointreau (RCOP.PA), and Citibank (C).
Tuck has five research centers where students can focus on specific business and management topics: corporate governance, digital strategies, global leadership, international business, and private equity and entrepreneurship. All the research centers are located in Woodbury Hall, above. Students work with businesses and professors to gain the cross-disciplinary experience necessary for conducting business in today's markets.
David B. Brewster and Timothy G. Healy graduated from Tuck in 2002 and went on to found EnerNOC (ENOC), a public corporation with $106 million in annual revenues that aims to help companies maximize energy efficiency.
Tuck's 8,600 living alumni stay connected through regional Tuck clubs. There are 60 clubs in 20 countries. Two out of three Tuck alumni make financial contributions to their alma mater each year, the highest rate of alumni giving among top business schools.
Tuck students pursue their interests both inside and outside the classroom. Student-run clubs provide opportunities to explore the community, with groups organized around careers, events, culture, service, sports, and other special interests. Tuck sits on the west side of Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H, which is home to 11,000 people. Hanover, in the Connecticut River Valley, is just 2 hours from Boston and 3 1/2 hours from Montreal. In their leisure time, those living in the Upper Valley can ski and explore the nearby White Mountains.
Each year, over 300 skiers and spectators from the nation's top business schools come to Dartmouth for the Tuck Winter Carnival. This year, the event featured a snow sculpture competition, ski races, and a hot dog-eating contest.
