OG的解释：In A, the insertion of was is unnecessary.

原本没什么疑问的，但忽然记起几天前的讨论比较类题目的帖子。记得7986 MM对以下题目的讲解：
A grasshopper is larger than is normal for a member of the insect class; Its abodomen can beup to 2 inches in the length, as opposed to the one inch long abodomen of the average insect.
“is normal 更合适些。 ... than, as都可以看做代词作主语用，保留谓语。
1. Do not eat more than is good for you
2. It may be more important than would seem ...”

觉得7986 MM讲的没错。但不知道这两种情况有什么区别？"was colder and wetter than usual in some regions" VS " is larger than is normal for a member of the insect class"。 usual后的IN和FOR造成的不同？请明白人帮我解释一下。谢谢了。

我的疑问是253题中的than usual和A grasshopper is larger than is normal for a member of the insect class; Its abodomen can beup to 2 inches in the length, as opposed to the one inch long abodomen of the average insect.中的 than is normal有什么结构不同之处?后者那题能用than normal吗?

Why in this question choose "usual" instead of "was normal"? I am confused. What's the difference?

我的理解: 原文weather, colder and wetter...中没有出现BE, 所以than后面也用不着. than is normal 那句原文有be在前面出现.

关于比较中这个后面部分助动词是否添加的问题我也很头痛呢！

和这道题目类似的有这样一道题：

In his eagerness to find a city worthy of Priam, the German archaeologist Schliemann cut through Troy and uncovered a civilization a thousand years older as was the city Homer’s heroes knew.
(A) older as was the city Homer’s heroes knew
(B) more ancient than the city known to Homer’s heroes
(C) older than was the city known to Homer’s heroes
(D) more ancient of a city than Homer’s heroes knew
(E) older of a city than was the one known to Homer’s heroes
the key:B
比较考点：比较对象。 a civilization——the city known to Homer's heroes

我原来觉得为什么不选择C呢？解释说这个was多余了应该删去。

但我以前学到过，在比较里面不上助动词或者be动词是不错的。

再想想我觉得自己明白了，在我这道题和LZ问的题目中，比较的前部分都不是一个完整句子，而是n. +adj. than...的结构，这样我要对称的话，前面不是句子就没有was我怎么能在后面添一个was呢！

如果LZ的题目改为the weather was colder and wetter than was usual in some regions，那这里后面这个was加的就是对的。

An example from Longman.

It is taking longer than usual for orders to reach our customers.

Regarding,

A grasshopper is larger than is normal for a member of the insect class.

That leads to a tentative conclusion that the 'is' in sentence above is unnecessary but not a

corrective error.
