why the answer is E not D????

是否,SB的定语从句引导词只能用WHO 或 WHOM 不能是THAT???

因为D，aperiod beginning in 1788,限定了a hundred years。这样是不符合逻辑的。
100年可以是从现在开始，也可以从去年开始。

用a period of a hundred years 就清楚表达了，这段时间（a period）是从1788年开始的。其实，在正规英文的表达中a period of 很内常用。
SB=主语？不一定。

前面没有提到过100年，用the 不好。再加上years后面是逗号，用the 也没什么根据。

关于这道题的补充：
(lzm)d:during一般与与一具体时段连用如：during the late 1950's,during the last decade,a hundred years是模糊时段，搭配不妥。
over可跟具体时段，也可跟模糊时段,over twenty years,over the next three years.
