The January program is an accelerated 18-month M.B.A. program that would still allow you to graduate at the same time (June 2011). Students complete the 18-month accelerated program by taking 4 classes per quarter instead of 3 in the second year (which is similar to the course load in the first year), or by taking summer classes between the first and second years of study.
The accelerated 18 month MBA curriculum was not originally designed to accommodate a summer internship. However, pursuit of an internship may be possible, for a highly motivated student if certain conditions are met. Students should consider the following conditions when determining eligibility to pursue an internship:
1. The US Immigration and Naturalization Service requires enrollment of international students for at least one full academic year (three academic quarters) before eligibility is granted within the United States for paid, off-campus employment, including an internship. Participation in Simon’s English Language and US Culture (ELUSC) Program, is one option that may fulfill this particular requirement and requires approval by the Admissions Committee; and
2. A student’s choice of concentration within their MBA program may only allow for a Rochester-based internship if the courses required to graduate on time are only available at Simon during the summer quarter. Students would need to carefully review the timing of course offerings before considering pursuit of a summer internship to ensure degree requirements are met within the required 18 month timeframe.
3. Internships outside the U.S. may be an alternative for an international student seeking to connect with a prospective employer during the M.B.A. experience.
In considering January entry, please also note that we carefully identify those candidates who we feel have a work profile that would make them a good fit for success in their career search at Simon regardless of whether or not they obtain an internship. Also, Simon’s overall placement rate of over 90% within 3 months after graduation includes both our September and January entrants, and placement success between the two groups is virtually identical.
