答案B，不知道itself 和it 是否可以指代不同的东西，在这里it应该指代的是sandpiper 吧

thereby: adv. =thus. You use thereby to introduce an important result or

consequence of the event or action you have just mentioned.

eg. A firm might sometimes sell at a loss to drive a competitor out of

business, and thereby increase its market power.

thereby是副词，这里表示结果，不能作连词，要由连词and连接。

LZ的翻译没有把thereby的意思包括进去，所以看上去不合逻辑。

虽然in turn也有相同的意思as a result of sth in a series of events，但是

activation是名词，缺少连系动词，与前面的句子脱节了。

and前后连接的是两个完整的句子，and thereby activate 应该是省略了主语吧，而

按照逻辑意思来看，and thereby activate 的主语应该是and前面的那句话，这应该用

一个名词替代，而不能省略吧
