answer is A

想请问各位nn,为什么说这个had still been的时态不对啊？未划线部分的 had installed electric lighting不也是一样的吗？

我来解释下

首先，E的where 是不对的，它修饰地点，所以，唯一逻辑的就是home

其次，grammtically, past perfect denotes an action completed at a specific time in the past.

作为home,它需要用simple past 来奠定一个时间点，来给theaters, restaurants, shops, and banks 那些做reference (不知道我这个expression是不是很awkward...)

所以，它不能用past perfect

OG 17,80,都是很好的例子，仔细看看ets的解释，一定能体会到的

我的看法：but后跟了一个独立的主句，where引导一个从句修饰but后主句中的home。所以如果where从句中没有明确表示时间的词，那么where从句中的谓语应该和but后主句的谓语动词时态对应，即和“was”对应，而不是和but之前的句子的谓语动词时态对应。如果从句用过去完成时，则表示动作先于主句的was，这明显不是句子要表达的意思。句子所表述的两个情况是发生在同一时间段的。
