1.The first step students can take to become competitive applicants, aside from obtaining a high GPA and GMAT score, is making sure to write aneffective, yet succinct, personal statement.


Ideally, you want to make sure you highlight short-term and long term goals,and express how your past experiences have been or will be conducive to achieving those goals. In other words, clarify your trajectory. Try toexplain how your current experiences are relevant to the fulfillment of yourfuture goals.


Moreover, you want to convey personal maturity and growth, and how your leadership style has evolved throughout the years. Admission committees often want to seewhat lessons you've learned through your work experiences, and how theselessons can contribute to the classroom conversation.

You also want to reference school specifics and briefly mention the reasons you are applying, and wanting to attend, the school you are applying to.Along the same lines, express how you are a Fit for the school. It may soundcliche, but admission committees do look at such things when making adetermination.


Last but not least, please avoid preventable mistakes, such as copying andpasting essays from another school. This often indicates a red flag anda failure to pay attention to detail; and do not incorporate the school's logointo your resume or personal statements. Many schools are very particular aboutthis. It hinges on the violation of copyright rules.

You also want your references elaborate on a particular strength ofyours, supported by aconcrete example. Doing so lends credibility to the relationship youhave with your reference. Try to avoid references who will simply write genericletters.



Moreover, have your references convey how a degree will help you be more successful at work. 

Lastly, it also helps if you can have a friend of the school, or evenalumni, write a letter of reference for you, if possible. Admission committeeslove it when future students are somehow connected or working with alumni orfriends of the school.
