I was getting free shit thrown at me: clothes, booze, harder stuff, women. Hamburgers. I'm just a regular dude from Detroit, though. I've maintained that relationship with my hometown for many years because I'm a loyal dude. The road could have been really crazy for me-- and it was-- but my party was mostly the substances. The funny thing is, DIDN'T REALLY START DOING DRUGS UNTIL I RAPPED ABOUT THEM.

   The first time I went to Amsterdam was for the promotion of the The Slim Shady LP. Man, we were young. I was probably 27. Going there for the first time was a crazy experience. It just seemed liked everyone was doing drugs-- all the time, everywhere.

I couldn't believe the effect my lyrics had on people-- they thought we were literally drug addicts and that they could get backstage or whatever by bringing us some substances. It was wild. I was never walking around with E in my own pocket, but if someone had it and they offered it, it was like, Okay, cool, join the crowd. Welcome to rock and roll.

   This one time in Texas, Proof and I took some mushrooms some dude had give to us the day before. We had a show that night at 8 o'clock, and we didn't want to take them too late in the day because they're extremely hard to come down from, so we took them around noon. There was a courtyard in the middle of the hotel, and we went down there and started throwing around this Nerf football, but it just kept smacking us in the face because our depth perception had gone completely fucking haywire. So we're throwing the ball, and we're laughing, and we think it's hilarious. At some point we must have gone back into the room, because I remember he was on one bed, and I was on the other, and we were jumping up and down like little fucking kids. Next thing you know, we sort of crashed and we're hanging off the beds, right? And we're looking at each other, and we're upside down. I looked over at Proof and said,"Are you coming down yet?" And he laughed and said,"No, are you?" I said, "Fuck, what are we gonna do? Our show is in an hour and a half."... There's no big ending to that story. Sorry. That memory just sticks out for me. Probably because it was just Proof and me, goofing around like idiots.

   As people know, the whole drug thing built into a problem for me at some point. I'm gld that I realized it and set myself in the right direction, trying to do something about it. It was dumb to even get started, but being young and dumb went hand in hand for me. I've had good people around me the whole time to help me through it-- my Shady family. We're pretty tight.
