想问问大家应该怎么背单词

我贴一些词，想以这些为例子问大家，单词应该怎么背？

比如：我遇到一个词 national unification, 民族统一。我觉得national 这个词很奇怪，找专门的注释：下面是牛津的解释。

好的，我表示明白我理解nation更倾向民族这个意思了。所以，我先仔细区分country, state, nation的区别，之后再背 national unification.

有时候，我很挫败感的。觉得背的这么细，但是看文章的时候，往往就是一扫眼的时间，但是我却要拿出20分钟或更多时间，区别这其中不同含义，还要背。我有时候觉得我在做无用功。
这样的词还比如, sovereignty(我的理解是统治权)； jurisdiction（审判权，管辖范围），我真觉得这样的词很难理解的。

我到底该不该把时间花这个地方呀，去确定这些词的精准含义，我不是英语专业的，为了一个考试，我需要这样扣吗？
