Since the physical work environment affects employee productivity and morale, the employees themselves should have the right to decide how their workplace is designed.
There is much debate over the issue of whether the employees should have the right to decide how their workplace is designed. Different people hold different views due to their distinct angles. Some people claim that because the physical work environment affects employee productivity and morale, the employees themselves should be provided the right to decide the workplace. While other people believe that not all the employees have the expertise knowledge about how to design the workplace, it is unrealistic to give them this right. As far as I am concerned, however, I agree that the workplace affects employee productivity and morale, but we should have the workplace designed not by the employees themselves but by the experts who know more about how to design. My view can be greatly substantiated by the following discussions.
The first argument that can be presented to develop my position is that by using their knowledge and experience of design workplace, experts are more competent to do the job than employees of the corporation. Because employees lack the relevant knowledge, although they can express what they expect and describe the workplace they wanted, it is difficult for them to realize the thought in their brain.
Under the circumstance, it is obvious that experts can finish the job more efficiently.
In addition, there is another reason for me to choose this statement. Because each employee want to design the workplace due to his own need, it is unavoidable that the arrangement of one employee will contradict with the other’s. to illustrate this, let us consider that in a work team, giving everybody the right to design the workplace, then it is most possible that the design of one employee who benefit from the workplace will do harm to the productivity of another. Hence, the best way is to let experts who come from the outside of the company to design the workplace and harmony the different ideas among employees.
Admittedly, it may be true that ignoring the attitudes of employees will influence the productivity and morale. Experts know little about what workers really needed and wanted. Though experts can design the workplace which will inspire workers to do work better in theory, if employees in the company do not used to the strange environment, the productivity will decrease. So the best way is to involve both workers and experts ideas of the designing the work environment.
To sum up, due to the above mentioned reasons, which sometimes correlate with each other to generate an integrate whole and thus become more convincing than any single one of them, we may be comfortable to say that because the work environment contribute to employees productivity and morale,
We should take into account the attitudes of employees, but more important, we should assume authority to make final decisions about workplace design. |
