A1. The following editorial appeared in the South Fork Gazette.

“Last year, the city contracted with Flower Power to plant a variety of flowers in big decorative pots on

Main Street
and to water them each week. By midsummer many of the plants were wilted. This year the city should either contract for two waterings a week or save money by planting artificial flowers in the pots. According to Flower Power, the initial cost for artificial flowers would be twice as much as for real plants, but after two years, we would save money. Public reaction certainly supports this position: in a recent survey, over 1,200 Gazette readers said that the city wastes money and should find ways to reduce spending.”

1)    美国利率与投资理论

GWD-12-Q35 to GWD-12-Q37:

      Many economists believe that a

high rate of business savings in the

United States is a necessary precursor

Line       to investment, because business sav-

  (5)      ings, as opposed to personal savings,

comprise almost three-quarters of the

national savings rate, and the national

savings rate heavily influences the

overall rate of business investment.

 (10)      These economists further postulate

that real interest rates—the difference

between the rates charged by lenders

and the inflation rates—will be low when

national savings exceed business

 (15)      investment (creating a savings surplus),

and high when national savings fall

below the level of business investment

(creating a savings deficit ).  However,

during the 1960’s real interest rates

 (20)      were often higher when the national

       savings surplus was large.  Counter-

       intuitive behavior also occurred when

real interest rates skyrocketed from

2 percent in 1980 to 7 percent in 1982,

 (25)      even though national savings and

investments were roughly equal

throughout the period.  Clearly, real

interest rates respond to influences

other than the savings/investment

 (30)      nexus.  Indeed, real interest rates may

themselves influence swings in the

savings and investment rates.  As real

interest rates shot up after 1979, for-

eign investors poured capital into the

 (35)     United States, the price of domestic

goods increased prohibitively abroad,

and the price of foreign-made goods

became lower in the United States.  As

      a result, domestic economic activity

 (40)     and the ability of businesses to save

and invest were restrained.

GWD-12-Q35:

The passage is primarily concerned with

  1. contrasting trends in two historical periods

  2. presenting evidence that calls into question certain beliefs

  3. explaining the reasons for a common phenomenon

  4. criticizing evidence offered in support of a well-respected belief

  5. comparing conflicting interpretations of a theory

Answer:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GWD-12-Q36:

According to the passage, which of the following resulted from foreign investment in the United States after 1979?

  1. An increase in real interest rates

  2. A decrease in the savings rate of certain other nations

  3. An increase in American investment abroad

  4. An increase in the price of American goods abroad

  5. A decrease in the price of domestic goods sold at home

Answer:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GWD-12-Q37:

The author of the passage would be most likely to agree with which of the following statements regarding the economists mentioned in line 1?

  1. Their beliefs are contradicted by certain economic phenomena that occurred in the United States during the 1960’s and the 1980’s.

  2. Their theory fails to predict under what circumstances the prices of foreign and domestic goods are likely to increase.

  3. They incorrectly identify the factors other than savings and investment rates that affect real interest rates.

  4. Their belief is valid only for the United States economy and not necessarily for other national economies.

  5. They overestimate the impact of the real interest rate on the national savings and investment rates.

2)    重力理论与事实相悖的解释

GWD17-Q35 to Q37:

(This passage was excerpted from material

published in 1996.)

When a large body strikes a planet

or moon, material is ejected, thereby

creating a hole in the planet and a local

Line deficit of mass.  This deficit shows up

  (5)      as a gravity anomaly:  the removal of

the material that has been ejected to

make the hole results in an area of

slightly lower gravity than surrounding

areas.  One would therefore expect that

 (10)      all of the large multi-ring impact basins

on the surface of Earth’s Moon would

show such negative gravity anomalies,

since they are, essentially, large holes

in the lunar surface.  Yet data collected

 (15)      in 1994 by the Clementine spacecraft

show that many of these lunar basins

have no anomalously low gravity and

some even have anomalously high

gravity.  Scientists speculate that early

 (20)      in lunar history, when large impactors

       struck the Moon’s surface, causing

millions of cubic kilometers of crustal

debris to be ejected, denser material

from the Moon’s mantle rose up

 (25)      beneath the impactors almost imme-

diately, compensating for the ejected

material and thus leaving no low gravity

anomaly in the resulting basin.  Later,

however, as the Moon grew cooler

 (30)      and less elastic, rebound from large

impactors would have been only partial

and incomplete.  Thus today such

       gravitational compensation probably

would not occur:  the outer layer of

the Moon is too cold and stiff.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

35. Q35:

According to the passage, the gravitational compensation referred to in line 33 is caused by which of the following?

  1. A deficit of mass resulting from the creation of a hole in the lunar surface
  2. The presence of material from the impactor in the debris created by its impact
  3. The gradual cooling and stiffening of the Moon’s outer layer
  4. The ejection of massive amounts of debris from the Moon’s crust
  5. The rapid upwelling of material from the lunar mantle

Answer:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

36. Q36:

The passage suggests that if the scientists mentioned in line 19 are correct in their speculations, the large multi-ring impact basins on the Moon with the most significant negative gravity anomalies probably

  1. were not formed early in the Moon’s history
  2. were not formed by the massive ejection of crustal debris
  3. are closely surrounded by other impact basins with anomalously low gravity
  4. were created by the impact of multiple large impactors
  5. were formed when the Moon was relatively elastic

Answer:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

37. Q37:

Which of the following best describes the organization of the passage?

  1. An anomalous finding is cited, the data used to support that finding are analyzed, and the finding is modified.
  2. A theory about a phenomenon is introduced, data seeming to disprove that theory are analyzed, and the theory is rejected.
  3. A phenomenon is described, a finding relating to the phenomenon is discussed, and a possible explanation for that finding is offered.
  4. A debate among scientists regarding the explanation for a particular phenomenon is outlined, and one position in that debate is shown to be more persuasive.
  5. The observation of an astronomical event is described, and two schools of thought about the explanation for that event are discussed.
