(D) had been people who were part of a widespread culture that was Algonquian-speaking
(E) were a people which had been part of a wide-spread, Algonquian-speaking culture

句中用at that time故应用一般过去式,且the residents是part of a widespread culture of Algonquian-speaking people的说法完全正确。

be involved with 表示“涉及”此时也可用in,而be involved in 强调in 的含义,表示“to be engaged in, to be wrapped"

be involved in sth.: concerned with sth. 与某事有关联的.(被卷入的)
e.g.: be/become/get involved in politics, criminal activities, etc.

be involved with sth.: (closely) connected with (sb.) 与某人有(密切)关系的,
e.g.: become emotionally involved with sb.
He sees her often but doesn't want to get too involved (with her).

Taste these!
就如我们常听到的: 我们已碰到了自己的敌人,那就是我们自己。
