重要修饰歧义!!! 欢迎讨论

新东方补充1和17,

1.the increase in hourly wages requested 和the increase in hourly wages that were requested , OG认为都对,

这里, requested修饰 increase , 不是 wages.

17 . increase in the incidence of malaria caused by ,OG说,Choice A can be faulted because it is not at first clear whether caused by modifies increase or malaria

那么对于 the x in y 结构中, 后面的分词或者从句到底修饰x, 还是y呢?

或者x of y 结构中, 后面的分词或者从句到底修饰x, 还是y呢?

1. Added to the increase in hourly wages requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.

(A) Added to the increase in hourly wages requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.

(B) Added to the increase in hourly wages which had been requested last July, the employees of the railroad are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.

(C) The railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits added to the increase in hourly wages that were requested last July.

(D) In addition to the increase in hourly wages that were requested last July, the railroad employees are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.E

(E) In addition to the increase in hourly wages requested last July, the employees of the railroad are now seeking an expanded program of retirement benefits.

Choice A presents a dangling modifier. The phrase beginning the sentence can fit nowhere in the sentence and make logical sense. Coming first, it modifies employees, the nearest free noun in the main clause; i.e., choice A says that the employees were added to the increase in hourly wages. Choice B also begins with a dangling modifier; moreover, the simple past tense requested is needed to place an action before the present action are…seeking. In choice C, were does not agree in number with the subject of the clause, increase, and it is not clear whether added to the increase is supposed to modify program or benefits. Choice D also lacks agreement (increase…were). Choice E is best for this question of medium difficulty.

17. There has been a 30- to 40-fold increase in the incidence of malaria caused by increasing mosquito resistance against pesticides.

(A) increase in the incidence of malaria caused by increasing mosquito resistance against

(B) increase in the incidence of malaria because of increasing resistance of mosquitoes to

(C) increasing malaria incidence because of increasing resistance of mosquitoes to

(D) incidence of malaria increase caused by increasing mosquito resistance against(B)

(E) incidence of malaria increase because of increased mosquito resistance to

Choice A can be faulted because it is not at first clear whether caused by modifies increase or malaria. Also, the proper expression here and in choice D is not resistance against but resistance to. Choice C, D, and E are wrong because the completed sentence must read 30- to 40-fold increase. In these choices, 30- to 40-fold illogically modifies incidence; furthermore, incidence of … increase in D and E is illogical. Choice B is best. The question is a little easier than the average.

如果纯照语法的话,按照ets的对C的解释,E也有问题:the increase in hourly wages requested, it is not clear whether requested is supposed to modify increase or wages.
