I believe for most S16 schools, pre-MBA background doesn't matter that much since a lot of people are doing MBA to switch careers. It doesn't mean relevant pre-MBA is not helpful but it is not necessary (some exceptions like PE)

I don't know the person you refer to, but I have a feeling that he has problems in networking/English communication/story telling. That's more critical than pre-MBA background. Although you could argue that his background lead to bad English communication skills.
