• Describe two different and distinct paths you could see your career taking long term. How do you see your two paths unfolding?

Please describe yourself to your MBA classmates. You may use almost any method to convey your message (e.g. words, illustrations). Feel free to be creative.

纽约大学斯特恩商学院（NYU Stern）今年未能免俗，跟在HBS屁股后面，对essay进行了一定程度的的变革，虽然不疼不痒，却让申请人在动笔前又相当地为难。这种变化体现在：所有的题目和去年一摸一样，但去年的第二篇“Two Paths”和第三篇“Personal Expression”今年变成了二选一，这个二选一是相当的TRICKY。下面我还是一篇一篇的简单分析一下。

Essay 1: Professional Aspirations (750 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)
(a) Why pursue an MBA (or dual degree) at this point in your life?
(b) What actions have you taken to determine that Stern is the best fit for your MBA experience?
(c) What do you see yourself doing professionally upon graduation?

这是一道标准的职业目标类的题目，关于“Why MBA”和“Why Now”的回答策略，我在其他学校的essay解析里已反复提及，这里不再赘述。 这篇essay的关键点是“Why Stern”，题目里用了“action”的字眼，所以如果你仅仅是通过浏览学校官方网站，就说服自己Stern是自己的第一选择，那显然不够说服力。正确的策略是做了足够的功课来了解Stern，比如通过参观校园、试听课程、参加招生说明会、与在校生或校友建立联系等等。“Why Stern”的部分必须给予足够的重视，因为Adcom心里很清楚，基本凡是申请Stern的同学必然也会同时申请纽约同城的死敌----哥伦比亚大学商学院（CBS），鉴于学校名气上的差距，自然而然Stern经常性地沦为CBS的候补。如果你不能充分展示自己与Stern的FIT，那么无论你背景有多好，Stern都不会买账的（这里赞一下Stern的气节）。

此外，这篇essay的C部分显得有点儿tricky，因为这牵扯到后面的二选一问题。如果你选择写“Two Paths”，那么C部分的笔墨是不是可以节约一些呢？而如果你选择回答“Personal Expression”，那C部分的笔墨是不是就应该更浓重一些呢? 当然仁者见仁，智者见智，也许我们不应该考虑这么多吧。

这篇essay其实有点烦人，把原本很简单的一个“Long-term Goal”搞得这么复杂，但Adcom也自有其道理。他们认为入学前大家必须有清晰的职业目标，但世界处在不断的变化之中，再加上MBA课程和同学的分享，你的见识会发生变化，所以大脑中应时刻有“Plan B”的意识，这是Adcom的真实用意。其实在有些学校的面试中也会有类似的问题，只不过是把“Long-term Goal”改成“Short-term Goal”而已。

值得一提的是，由于题目中提到“Stern的使命”，你将不得不再次面对“Why Stern”的挑战，只不过这次是从立意更高的角度出发。无论如何，大家看到Stern是多么地“自恋”，如果你找不到FIT的地方，结局只能是你对Stern的单相思。

关于“Two Paths”还有一个小陷阱，题目中用到“Different and Distinct”的字眼，那么选择两条相差甚远的道路是否明智呢？比如选择一是成为一位银行家，选择二是成为一位政治家。我个人认为是没有问题的，关键是两个选择之间要有一根看不见的线相牵连，线的本身或者线的那一头则是Stern的使命。至于回答“你最倾向哪一条道路”，那又是一个讲故事的好机会了，好好珍惜吧。

Option B: Personal Expression

曾经是Stern最引以为豪的、最开放的、最有创意的一篇essay，今年竟然沦落成了二选一，有点儿悲哀。笔者认为，Stern在这个地方，多少失掉了一些气节。

回到题目本身，大家可能更关注的是到底采取哪一种方式来回答这个题目，或者adcom到底喜欢哪一种方式？比如，如果用幻灯片，有同学会担心adcom认为这是从Chicago Booth直接照搬过来的；如果写essay，则很难体现出创造力，很难让AO们high起来。其实，采用什么形式真的不重要，重要的还是内容、内容、内容，以及所呈现的手法。今年即将入学Stern的同学，有三位和我并肩作战过，一位写的essay，一位用的幻灯片，一位录制的video。而据美国同行统计，越来越多的申请人倾向采用essay的形式。无论采取哪一种方式，你都应该把你最personal的一面展现出来，能够说服AO你完全可以成为Stern社区的一份子，充满活力和奉献精神。

那么说到二选一，我想大家一定会为到底选择Option A还是Option B而头疼不已。如果选择“Two Paths”，可以在Essay-1中留有更多空间，把“Why MBA”和“Why Stern”充分展开；而另一方面则意味着失去展现自己创造力的机会，而这一项素质似乎也是多年来Stern AO们比较喜闻乐见的。综合考虑，从策略层面看，似乎选择Option B是更好的选择，但从技术层面看，这也意味着你选择了一条更加艰难的道路。
