答案选E。答案里面的it指的是owning and living in a freestanding house。但是第一句里面已经有了its,而且这个its应该指的是freestanding house，这里面的it和its指的东西不一样啊，按理来说句子里面的it 和its不是应该指代同一个东西么？

我觉得第一个its作为on 介词短语中起到修饰成分，第二个it作为分句的主语成分不在一个层次，不会指代混淆。

A选项为什么不对？我还是不太清楚，请NN帮忙解释一下？

我本来也想选A，
解释里强调此题是平行对称
owning and living in a freestanding house 和 it 对称，
is 和 was 对称，
of a majority of young adults 和 of earlier generation 对称
所以，当之无愧的选E。

如果把E的as换成like的话是不是也对呢？
另外那个A里的that不能起到和it一样的作用吗？
