答案说plural pronoun those cannot refer to the singular civilization and thus lack a referent.
如果把THOSE换成THAT那就是指代an ancient civilization吗？如果是这样的话句子意思不对吧？
所以是不是不能用代词了呢？

这里civilizations才是比较对象

赞同#1的解释，这句话唯一的主语就是盐&湿，所以后句动词did前的those指代的一定也是盐&湿。

我也是D想不明白
后来我觉得 选D就是说用those指代those civilizations  
可是前文并没有出现过其他的civilizations   只不过是A选项中提到过
就有种错觉文章提到过这些civilizations。。。。
不知道我说的对不对

从逻辑上those指代civilizations，但前文无可指代对象（只有单数的civilization），所以those错。
