George Washington University MBA FAQs

If you have additional questions, please contact the Global MBA Program Office at 202.994.1212 or mbaft@gwu.edu.

What are the prerequisites for the Global MBA?
There are no prerequisites for the Global MBA; however, applicants with weak quantitative skills may want to consider taking a pre-calculus or calculus course after being admitted. Or, incoming students may elect to attend MBA Prep Week, described below, for quantitative review.

Is it possible to be admitted for the Spring Semester?
No. The Global MBA admits new students for the Fall Semester only.

Is the Global MBA accredited?
Yes. The School of Business is accredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. AACSB International is the premier accrediting agency for bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in business administration and accounting.

When do classes begin?
Although classes begin in early September, Global MBA students must attend a mandatory, two-week orientation (The MBA Institute) in mid-August. Click here to see GW's academic calendar to confirm the starting date of the MBA Institute. Contact the Global MBA Office to confirm the starting date of the MBA Institute. In addition, international students are invited to attend MBA Prep Week, prior to the start of the MBA Institute and provides quantitative review, career workshops, communication skill development, and guidance on living and studying in the Washington, DC area.

How long does it take to complete the program?
Students complete 57 credit hours, and can finish the program, depending on pace, in 16, 18 or 21 months. To accelerate studies, students may take classes during the summer semester. We highly recommended that a student complete an internship to strengthen the resume.

Can I waive any classes or transfer graduate credit?
Students may waive up to six credits (4 core classes @1.5 credits each) from previous graduate or undergraduate coursework. Courses waived do not require the substitution of upper-level courses. Before starting the first semester, students must petition for waivers. Guidelines are fairly stringent.

What is the teaching methodology?
Courses are highly integrated and taught using the team-based approach. Most assigned work is completed in five to six-person teams. Depending on the subject, faculty utilize some combination of lecture, case method, project work, simulations, client work, and group papers and presentations. We believe this is the most effective way for students to gain a practical education.

International Applicants
Is the 12-3 curriculum sufficient?
No. The George Washington University does not consider the 12-3 curriculum equivalent to a US bachelor's degree, and an additional year of education is not adequate. To qualify for admission, applicants who have completed a 12-3 program must also obtain a two-year master's degree from a recognized institution.

I have lived in the U.S. for many years. Must I take the TOEFL or IELTS?
Only applicants who have completed a degree in a country in which English is the native language (United States, English-speaking Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc.) are exempt from the TOEFL or IELTS. This rule applies regardless of citizenship and/or residency.

What is the minimum TOEFL or IELTS score for international applicants?
The Admissions Committee requires any applicant who has not completed a university degree in a country in which English is the principal language to submit a TOEFL score of 600 under the paper format (100 under the internet format or 250 under the computer format). Applicants may also submit the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 7.0.
