如何在Michigan的Waitlist上前进一步

Linda Abraham (Mar 17, 2005 10:09:24 AM) First I want to welcome you all to Accepted.com's Michigan Ross waitlist chat.

Linda Abraham (Mar 17, 2005 10:09:35 AM) I also want to welcome Jim Hayes, Director of Admissions, Mengdan Chu, Associate Director of Admissions, and Michele Thompson, Associate Director of Admissions.

Linda Abraham (Mar 17, 2005 10:09:44 AM) Thanks to everyone for joining.

raju_gupta (Mar 17, 2005 10:10:28 AM) There is a lot of confusion regarding the email address to send the updates. Can you confirm that all the communications/updates need to be sent to mbawaitlist@umich.edu?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:10:40 AM) Raju, that is the correct email address to use.

Damon Dance (Mar 17, 2005 10:10:58 AM) Are additional recommendation letters accepted for further review in the admissions process?

michfan (Mar 17, 2005 10:11:28 AM) How many people are on the waitlist now?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:12:02 AM) Michfan, there are approximately 300 waitlisted applicants presently. That is about the same as last year same time.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:12:13 AM) Damon, yes, if the recommendation letter has added value. We also welcome other updates.

loveUMich (Mar 17, 2005 10:12:19 AM) Mengdan: Would sending in an additional recommendation letter from someone whom I've worked with in a post-college extracurricular setting enhance my application?

qwerty (Mar 17, 2005 10:12:29 AM) Michelle: Should we send all supplemental materials at once or can they be sent as they are ready?

Jeff A. (Mar 17, 2005 10:12:49 AM) Jim: What are the best next steps? Should we contact the admissions officer handling our application to possibly discuss areas of concern? If so, by email or by phone?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:13:00 AM) Querty, send supplemental materials as they are ready.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:13:14 AM) LoveUMich: Extracurricular info would be very welcome!

Chao-Hwa Chang (Mar 17, 2005 10:13:14 AM) Michelle: So all the updates should be sent to that email regardless of regions?

manojs_mba (Mar 17, 2005 10:13:24 AM) Mengdan: If I am admitted from the waiting list will I be considered for the loan program or would it to be too late for an international student?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:14:07 AM) Chao-Hwa Chang: The updates should be sent to the mbawaitlist email address but you could also copy the AD for the region if you like.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:14:11 AM) Manojs_mba: Yes, all Michigan MBAs will be qualified for CitiAssist!

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:14:14 AM) Jeff, we don't have the resources to provide feedback to our waitlisted applicants. The best next move is to carefully review your application, and try to decide on areas where you think your application could be stronger. Then send in whatever updates you think are appropriate.

raju_gupta (Mar 17, 2005 10:14:16 AM) Michelle: Can my recommender send the additional recommendation through e-mail or should I follow the paper recommendation procedure as was applicable for normal application recommendation?

michfan (Mar 17, 2005 10:14:26 AM) Jim: Can we expect to hear as soon as a vacancy is created?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:14:30 AM) Raju: E-mail is fine

Jeff A. (Mar 17, 2005 10:14:55 AM) How many from the 300 waitlisted last year were offered admission?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:15:25 AM) michfan, we will begin to work on our wait list in earnest after our Round 3 is complete (around mid May). We will try to be done by mid June.

vikram (Mar 17, 2005 10:15:35 AM) Jim: Is additional information (personal or professional) accepted in the form of essays? If yes, is there any prescribed length?

michfan (Mar 17, 2005 10:16:03 AM) Mengadan: Can the recommendation letter be from a supervisor from 5 years back?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:17:23 AM) We admitted about 100 from the wait list last year.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:17:39 AM) Michfan: It depends. Recent ones might provide more insight into your current abilities.

Heon Song (Mar 17, 2005 10:17:45 AM) Jim: Hi, if a candidate is not admitted after being on the waitlist, is Ross "re-applicant friendly"?

alex (Mar 17, 2005 10:18:03 AM) Mengdan: I read in the Q&A on your website that the additional materials should be sent to the one who signed the decision letter. How we can know his/her e-mail address?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:18:15 AM) Heon Song: Ross is very "re-applicant friendly."

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:18:22 AM) Vikram, we accept additional information via email or snail mail. There is no prescribed length - whatever you think will improve your chances.

raju_gupta (Mar 17, 2005 10:18:44 AM) Michelle: The decision letter says that one should show one's intent of being on the waitlist by April 30. Does it mean that waitlisted candidates will be considered for admission only after that date?

lynntang (Mar 17, 2005 10:18:54 AM) Jim: How many people in the waitlist were accepted in the last year?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:19:04 AM) Alex: Send in your additional information to the waitlist email address and we will forward it to the signer.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:19:11 AM) Raju: Yes, we will start to work on the waitlist mid-May.

loveUMich (Mar 17, 2005 10:19:12 AM) Thanks for answering my questions Mengdan. If I'm concerned that my interview was part of the reason I was placed on the waitlist, what should I communicate in my email to the Admissions Committee?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:19:21 AM) lynntang, About 100 were admitted from the wait list last year.

Amit B (Mar 17, 2005 10:19:29 AM) Michelle: How does the selection process work? Is it rolling or do you admit waitlists only on a certain date?

michfan (Mar 17, 2005 10:19:38 AM) Jim: Would a 4.0/4.0 GPA from an Masters course from the University of Michigan help?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:20:00 AM) Amit: It is a rolling process. Selection will begin mid-May.

RonClabo (Mar 17, 2005 10:20:10 AM) Michelle: Can wait listed applicants attend Go Blue! Rendezvous?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:20:51 AM) michfan, a high GPA from any top school helps, but the GPA is only one aspect of the application. We look for strength across the board.

Guest (Mar 17, 2005 10:20:58 AM) Jim: Does the number of waitlisted candidates include both Round 1 and Round 2 applicants?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:21:13 AM) RonClab Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate waitlisted applicants at Go Blue! Rendezvous.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:21:14 AM) LoveUmich: You may address/explain if you feel so. Yet people feel differently when they walk out of the interview room. And most likely, the interview would not be the only factor for being waitlisted.

manojs_mba (Mar 17, 2005 10:21:26 AM) Thanks Mengdan.

Undral (Mar 17, 2005 10:21:30 AM) Mengdan: Is there a time frame during which I should send my supplemental information (e.g, CPA exam passage confirmation, etc.)??

misa (Mar 17, 2005 10:21:45 AM) Michelle: I am planning to retake the GMAT. Though I want to prepare well, until when will you wait for the new score?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:22:25 AM) Misa: We will be working the waitlist from mid-May to about mid-June. Anytime up until about the first week of June is fine.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:22:34 AM) Undral: Anytime would be fine, prior to Mid-June would be the best.

Linda Abraham (Mar 17, 2005 10:23:03 AM) Michelle, I am still getting a lot of questions about the email address for waitlist correspondence. Could you please provide it one more time and confirm that all waitlist correspondence should go to that address?

Sue B. (Mar 17, 2005 10:23:18 AM) Mengdan: Does the number of people accepted from the waitlist depend on the number of accepted students who confirm they are attending?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:23:48 AM) The email address is - MBAwaitlist@umich.edu.

vishal jain (Mar 17, 2005 10:24:15 AM) Michelle: Will the waitlist results go out only during late April/early May or is there a chance that they might be declared earlier?

michfan (Mar 17, 2005 10:24:36 AM) Mengdan: Do we need to send additional documents showing our involvement with the community?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:24:59 AM) Vishal: In general, we work the waitlist after Round 3 is complete. This is in mid-May.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:24:59 AM) You can visit www.bus.umich.edu/admissions/waitlist.html for waitlist info/Q&A.

michfan (Mar 17, 2005 10:25:37 AM) Michelle: I have been highly ranked in prof certification exams. Would sending a copy of that help?

Heon Song (Mar 17, 2005 10:25:57 AM) Mengdan: Do you give additional weight to information from the interview in the case of waitlist or are all submitted materials equally regarded?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:26:09 AM) Sue: Yes.

Don-Ho Chien(Taiwan) (Mar 17, 2005 10:26:28 AM) Mengdan: Will it be possible to have an offer by April? I am sure many applicants have other schools that awaits acceptance....

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:26:47 AM) michfan, you have to walk a thin line between maintaining just enough contact without being perceived as a pest. The key is to maintain enough contact not to get "lost in the sauce."

Brendan (Mar 17, 2005 10:26:52 AM) Jim: What is the time frame for sending new information? I am thinking particularly about retaking the GMAT. How much time do I have to study?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:26:56 AM) Michfan: I encourage you to send the information that you believe is helpful to your overall application.

Jeff A. (Mar 17, 2005 10:27:17 AM) Michelle: I want to make sure that it comes across that I am sincerely interested in attending Ross, however I don't want to seem like a pest. What would be the appropriate amount of contact with the admissions officer handling our application?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:27:46 AM) Heon Song: All materials are equally weighted. In case the interview is the only concern, we may reach out to talk with you.

Meesh (Mar 17, 2005 10:27:52 AM) Mengdan: How many students typically forgo their waitlist spot?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:28:30 AM) Brendan, if you think the GMAT is an issue, you should try to take it again as soon as possible -- but not until you are well prepared. We will work on the wait list between mid May and mid June, so submitting a higher score prior to mid June would be fine.

colin (Mar 17, 2005 10:28:41 AM) Jim: Should we summit recommendations on behalf of our recommenders or have our recommenders email the waitlist email and reference the applicant?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:29:19 AM) Jeff A: It is best to contact the AD when you have relevant updates. Use your best judgment to walk that thin line that Jim mentioned above.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:29:27 AM) Colin, it is best if you ask recommenders to send recommendations to us directly, either via email or snail mail.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:29:52 AM) Don-H If there is a compelling reason, please write to us and we would try to give you a decision, one way or the other, sooner.

Jeff A. (Mar 17, 2005 10:29:57 AM) Jim: Would you take recommendations from current Ross students that could provide some insight to our application?

Victor Lesley (Mar 17, 2005 10:30:40 AM) Michele: As a California resident, I have not interviewed with anyone at Ross. Would an interview improve my chances?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:31:10 AM) Jeff A., we would accept letters of support from current Ross students.

Amit B (Mar 17, 2005 10:31:11 AM) Thanks Michele!

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:31:12 AM) Meesh: It varies year by year, but it would be a small pool who do not respond to us.

steve (Mar 17, 2005 10:31:27 AM) Mendan, I recently took the GRE; would providing those scores be helpful to assess my quant abilities?

Stephen (Mar 17, 2005 10:31:41 AM) Jim: Should I send additional information now, or around mid-May?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:31:53 AM) Victor: You should contact the interview office to schedule an interview if you have not interviewed yet. Here is the e-mail address rossintv@umich.edu

lynntang (Mar 17, 2005 10:32:00 AM) Michele: If there are no admitted people from my country who give up their admission spot, do I have the opportunity to be accepted?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:32:04 AM) Steve: Not really...your GMAT would be more helpful.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:32:08 AM) Stephen, please send in whatever updates you have as soon as they are completed.

polly (Mar 17, 2005 10:32:34 AM) Mengdan: Can I get personal feedback at this time (before R2 waitlist decision) to understand how I can improve my application?

daryn (Mar 17, 2005 10:32:45 AM) Michelle: Can you please give me an example or two of things that waitlisted applicants should not do?

mrak (Mar 17, 2005 10:33:17 AM) Jim: If decisions are made as late as mid-June, will there be any gotcha in applying for FAFSA/other loans? Also, will scholarships be considered for people accepted off the waitlist to the same degree as regular admits?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:33:46 AM) Lynntang: Admission is not based on country. We evaluate candidates based on the individual merits in their application.

Shruti (Mar 17, 2005 10:34:02 AM) Michele: If I feel that my GMAT score could have been one of the factors for my waitlist status, are there other ways to show improvement or analytical skills aside from re-taking the GMAT?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:34:22 AM) Polly: Due to resource constraint, unfortunately we are unable to provide individual feedback. But please refer to the waitlist info sheet - a lot of insight there and compare it with your application!

Heon Song (Mar 17, 2005 10:34:27 AM) Mengdan: If someone is accepted from the waitlist after the deposit deadline, is a deposit expected at that time?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:34:53 AM) Heon Song: A deposit is always needed.

Harish (Mar 17, 2005 10:34:59 AM) Hi Mengdan. I did send a email to mbawaitlist@umich.edu confirming my interest to be on the waitlist but did not get an acknowledgement. I know you guys are super busy these days but even an automatic confirmation would be nice :-)

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:35:19 AM) Daryn: Some things waitlisted applicants shouldn't do include: 1. Being in the waitlist doesn't mean you should just wait; provide updates but not constant communication 2. Don't ask for constant confirmation of whether or not we have received your materials.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:35:38 AM) mrak, we do consider wait list admits for scholarship, but obviously not to the extent of those admitted up front. Also, you should begin working on the FAFSA right away. Just think positive and assume you will be admitted.

daryn (Mar 17, 2005 10:35:45 AM) Michele: Can you please give me an example of some of the things that would decrease our chances of being admitted.

Undral (Mar 17, 2005 10:36:21 AM) Mengdan: If the review of waitlisted candidates begins in mid-May, how long does it take for the Admissions Committee to make a decision and for the applicant to receive the decision? I am wondering about that because I must make an appointment at the US Consulate for a visa interview (currently there is 2 months waiting list).

a_ravi (Mar 17, 2005 10:36:31 AM) Jm: What is the scope of additional materials I can present? I want to expand on some activities already highlighted in my essays, this time in depth .

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:37:29 AM) Shruti: You could take a quantitative college-level course (and get an A of course!) to show improvement in your skills.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:37:47 AM) Hi Harrish: We got it unless it bounced back to you. Sorry but we do not have the resource to acknowledge all materials sent in. Your materials are included in your application - do not worry.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:37:52 AM) A_ravi, there is no limit on what you can send to us. Additional essays would be fine, especially if they are an attempt to address what you view as shortcomings in your original submission.

yogesh_agarwal (Mar 17, 2005 10:37:54 AM) Michele: Would rewriting essays be one of the ways to strengthen the application further?

Jeff A. (Mar 17, 2005 10:38:12 AM) Jim - when you mention maintain contact, from what I understand, you only encourage us to use email as a communication vehicle. Is that accurate?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:38:41 AM) Daryn: Another example of something that would decrease the chances of being admitted is rudeness with any of the Admissions Committee.

Damon Dance (Mar 17, 2005 10:38:59 AM) Michele: I have seen mid June mentioned a few times as a cut off date for supplemental information. Will applicants be admitted after this time?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:39:15 AM) Jeff A., You can use email or the postal system to stay in touch. I don't think calling in would net much for you.

Nicole (Mar 17, 2005 10:39:30 AM) Mengdan: To demonstrate our professional accomplishment in these few months, can we just write additional essay on it ourselves or we need additional recommendation from our supervisor?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:39:44 AM) Yogesh_A: If you feel that an essay could be strengthened, then I would encourage you to re-write it.

andre alonzo (Mar 17, 2005 10:39:51 AM) Michele: Does a recommendation from a Michigan alum have any more weight than a standard recommendation?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:40:03 AM) Undral: We did not say that - you should go ahead to schedule an interview with us now if you have not interviewed yet.

raju_gupta (Mar 17, 2005 10:40:32 AM) Mengdan: My supervisor has told me that he has recommended me for promotion but in my company the promotions are effective from July 1 and hence final communication comes around August. Should I mention my recommendation in my update?

Harish (Mar 17, 2005 10:40:58 AM) Jim : I will need a F1 visa to attend Ross. To get a F1 visa, I would need to schedule an interview with consulate these days. And unfortunately there is almost a two month waiting period to get an interview at the consulate. This makes it hard for students from India to attend Ross if accepted later than June. Can you please comment on this?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:41:12 AM) Damon: When we get to mid-June, we will likely identify a smaller group of about 30 waitlisted applicants to determine if they would like to stay on the waitlist until mid-August.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:41:13 AM) Nicole: Additional essays would be great. Recommendation letters would be fine if new info is provided.

vibhu (Mar 17, 2005 10:41:26 AM) Michele: Have applications been up/down from last year? What is the selectivity like this year?

kschad (Mar 17, 2005 10:41:41 AM) Mengdan: What is the probability that an applicant will be accepted after June?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:42:00 AM) Andre: No, a recommendation from an alum does not hold more weight.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:42:02 AM) Raju: Yes please.

Sue B. (Mar 17, 2005 10:42:11 AM) Michele: What is the deadline for Round 1-3 admitted students to make their decisions about whether they will attend?

ross_wl (Mar 17, 2005 10:42:23 AM) Mengdan: How many people are put on the wait list and how many are eventually accepted? Are there students who don't provide any information?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:42:40 AM) Harish, You are correct. The very first group of waitlists we work on are the international applicants. We will make every attempt to make those decisions early on -- hopefully by early June.

GoBlue (Mar 17, 2005 10:42:48 AM) Jim: If Michigan is our first choice school, what would you advise when considering offers from other schools given the delayed decision of Michigan waitlist applicants? I am afraid of rejecting other school offers and risking rejection from your school.

Your future. Our mission.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:42:52 AM) Vibhu: Applications are about the same as last year and selectivity is as competitive as ever.

Victor Lesley (Mar 17, 2005 10:43:08 AM) Thanks Michele.

Anju (Mar 17, 2005 10:43:21 AM) Michele: Do think retaking TOEFL is advisable? Mine is below average for the class of 2004.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:43:28 AM) Round 1 and 2 Deadline is April 30. Round 3 is June 15.

vikram (Mar 17, 2005 10:43:47 AM) Jim: In addition to strengthening weak areas of an application, is a waitlisted candidate accepted in order to add a unique perspective to the admitted class?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:43:56 AM) Kschad: It is still quite possible if history is of any indication. We had admits off from the waitlist in late summer.

misa (Mar 17, 2005 10:44:32 AM) Mendgan: I read that recommendations from faculty are usually have less of an impact. Does it mean the academic aspects are not included or does it mean the information from the recommendations must be old? What's problem with academic recommendations?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:45:09 AM) Anju: If your TOEFL is below the average, then it would not hurt for you to take it again.

Jimmy A. (Mar 17, 2005 10:45:09 AM) Michele: I interviewed with USC for my Consortium interview, since I live in the Los Angeles area. However, since Michigan is my first choice in the Consortium, should I have interviewed directly with Ross instead? Can I still interview with Ross, although I already interviewed at USC for the Consortium?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:45:21 AM) GoBlue, I would encourage you to do all that you can to get admitted from our waitlist. If we cannot give you a decision by the time you need it, then you have to do whatever you think is right for you. In some cases, that may mean accepting another offer.

andre alonzo (Mar 17, 2005 10:45:38 AM) Jim: Would taking a supplementary class be of benefit at this time?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:46:07 AM) Jimmy A: We will accept the interview that you did at USC. It is not necessary for you to interview with Ross.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:46:08 AM) Ross: There are about 300 currently, perhaps about 100 would be admitted. And yes, there are always a few who forgo the waitlist.

manojs_mba (Mar 17, 2005 10:46:18 AM) Michele: Don't you think that wait listed applicants from the first round are at an advantage compared to wait listed applicants from second round as they have more time to prepare??

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:47:05 AM) Manojs: I don't think that there is any advantage.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:47:07 AM) Andre, taking an additional course may help. For example, if the quant portion of your GMAT is lower, you can take and ace a Calculus or stats course. Also, retaking the GMAT and coming up with a higher score may help your chances if you think that is an issue.

Douglas Lopes (Mar 17, 2005 10:47:19 AM) Jim, I am very committed to go to Michigan. How can I express my commitment? Please give an example.

yogesh_agarwal (Mar 17, 2005 10:47:38 AM) Michele: For international students, a mid-May/early June decision would mean very less time for visa processing. Does Ross help students admitted from the waitlist get their VISA quicker?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:48:29 AM) Misa: Academics are important - we evaluate your academics from your school work (undergrad, grad work if any) and your GMAT, so recommendations from professors may not be necessary. Use Recommendations for your professional side.

Undral (Mar 17, 2005 10:48:39 AM) Mengdan: When you begin reviewing waitlisted candidates (mid-May), do you notify them as soon as the decision is reached OR do you wait until you made decision on all waitlisted candidates and notify at once (end of June)?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:49:16 AM) Yogesh: We understand the visa process and try to get out international decisions as soon as we can.

Maggie (Mar 17, 2005 10:49:34 AM) Michele: Since I had no opportunity to be interviewed, is there a way to have an interview before mid-May?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:49:42 AM) Douglas, I cannot provide an example without having your application in front of me. I can only suggest that you review the information for Waitlisted applicants that we linked to earlier in the chat. Then review your application against those general guidelines to determine if there are areas of your application that could be improved. Then update the application (essays, GMAT retake, additional recommendation letters, updates on achievements at work, etc.) and send it to us.

Jeff A. (Mar 17, 2005 10:50:06 AM) By the way, thanks for hosting this chat as well as the application workshops back in December. It really helps us applicants a great deal and lets us get a glimpse of the collaborative Michigan culture.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:50:32 AM) Undral: Yes, we do try to notify as soon as possible so you can prepare to come here!

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:50:34 AM) Maggie: You can schedule an interview via the website. The address is rossintv@umich.edu.

Shruti (Mar 17, 2005 10:50:55 AM) Mengdan: You mentioned that an additional recommendation letter would be useful if it had new information. What if I don't know what was written in my initial recommendation letters?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:51:18 AM) Jeff A. , we appreciate the complement. We try to do as much as possible to provide understanding of the application process, and what we look for in a successful application.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:51:18 AM) Maggie: You can schedule your interview via our website. The e-mail address is rossintv@umich.edu .

raju_gupta (Mar 17, 2005 10:51:20 AM) Thanks Mengdan.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:51:30 AM) Shruti: I would check with the recommender...

ross_wl (Mar 17, 2005 10:51:50 AM) Mengdan: Is there a particular format in which our recommendation must be submitted?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:52:17 AM) Ross: no set format - email or letter would be fine.

Damon Dance (Mar 17, 2005 10:52:18 AM) Michelle: Should additional recommendations follow the standard Ross format or can it be written differently?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:52:18 AM) Damon: It is helpful if they follow the Ross format.

mrak (Mar 17, 2005 10:52:34 AM) Mengdan: If one were to request early decision by late-April because of impending deadlines from other schools to accept their offer, will it negatively affect the decision being made by Ross, particularly given that the candidate prefers Ross more than other schools?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:53:08 AM) Mrak: Certainly not. Actually you might want to negotiate with the other schools about your response deadline.

nav_nayak (Mar 17, 2005 10:53:31 AM) Jim: Would you consider a GMAT score of 690 below the Ross average? The waitlist FAQ website says 700 as the average whereas the link 'average' says 690.

a_ravi (Mar 17, 2005 10:53:39 AM) Michelle: If I were to come to visit Michigan and present additional materials in person, can I meet with the adcom members?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:53:39 AM) A_Ravi: Unfortunately, we don't have the resources to meet with waitlisted applicants in person.

Undral (Mar 17, 2005 10:53:58 AM) Mengdan: I meant interview to receive a visa to come to the US. That is why I was curious as to when I should expect to hear the decision. However, speaking of personal interview with the member of Admissions Committee, I would love to do one if that helps, however, I am back in Mongolia (currently under work and family constraints) and the only way to interview would be over the phone.

Anju (Mar 17, 2005 10:54:15 AM) Michele - I do suppose rewriting/additional essays would benefit me greatly, however, I am yet to understand how they shall be presented. I want to know whether sending additional essays via email to the Associate Dir. would be fine.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:54:41 AM) nav_nayak, The average for the admitted class so far is 700. There are several admits with scores lower than that, and several with higher scores. The GMAT is only one of several factors we review for.

Hector S (Mar 17, 2005 10:54:47 AM) Jim: What needs to happen for a waitlist applicant to be accepted?

Harish (Mar 17, 2005 10:55:43 AM) Mengdan: I have already submitted two recommendations from my supervisors, one is my direct supervisor, a director, and another is VP of my division who directs my activities due to the nature of my work. Would you recommend getting another recommendation from a senior, with whom I closely work, or do you recommend that I get a external recommendation?

nav_nayak (Mar 17, 2005 10:56:00 AM) Jim: Are waitlisted candidates considered for financial aid/scholarships?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:56:16 AM) Undral: We do phone interviews - please reach out to our interview office soon. We try to make decisions on most international waitlists by June in light of visa application time.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:56:18 AM) Anju: You may send additional essays to mbawaitlist@umich.edu and copy the AD if you like. Either way, the process is the same in that the essay will be printed and added to your file for consideration later in mid-May when we begin to review our waitlisted applicants.

vibhu (Mar 17, 2005 10:56:23 AM) Mengdan: Are recommendations from colleagues and/or clients looked upon favorably? I was involved in a motorcycle club for 6 years - would getting a recommendation from the president of the club add anything to my application?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:56:27 AM) Hector, you need to provide enough additional supportive information to provide a basis for admission from the wait list. This can take on may forms. For example, GMAT retake, additional essays, additional recommendation letters, updates from work, etc.

loveUMich (Mar 17, 2005 10:57:00 AM) Michele: If I completed an alumni interview but have not visited the campus, would visiting the campus enhance my application? How should I communicate my campus visit to the adcom?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:57:28 AM) nav_nayak, yes we do consider waitlist admits for scholarships/financial aid. But the opportunities are not as great, especially for scholarships.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:58:02 AM) Harrish: Only if it's relevant and value-added. Too many recommendation letter may not be as helpful. External ones are fine if it speaks to your outside involvement, not your work experience.

Anju (Mar 17, 2005 10:58:15 AM) Jim - There is an active Ross alumnus in the city where I live. Do you think it would be feasible for me to schedule an interview with him? I am not sure I can present myself as good on the phone as in person.

Shruti (Mar 17, 2005 10:59:10 AM) Thanks Mengdan and Michele!

XiaoyanZHANG_CHINA (Mar 17, 2005 10:59:23 AM) Mengdan: Which method will be used to notify those admitted from the waitlist, phone, email or web post?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:59:28 AM) Anju, you should reach out to him to see if he can interview you. It would certainly be more expedient that trying to come to Ann Arbor for the interview. It is weighted equally to a face to face interview here in Ann Arbor!

BrianG (Mar 17, 2005 10:59:36 AM) Jim: If I have already addressed my perceived weakness in my application (low GPA) in the optional essay and through additional courses, would it be advisable to mention it again during this waitlist period or just focus on other parts of my application?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:59:42 AM) Vibhu: That would be fine - are you still involved now though?

Undral (Mar 17, 2005 11:00:18 AM) Mengdan: Thank you for your help. And yes, I agree with other candidates, this chat is very helpful to us all.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:00:56 AM) loveUMich: Visiting campus might enhance your passion to attend Ross. This, in turn, may help you to articulate your reasons for wanting to attend. You should send an e-mail to mbawaitlist@umich.edu with the AD name in the subject line (don't worry...we will get the e-mail). Let us know you are coming as we'd like to stop out to say hello during your visit.

zing (Mar 17, 2005 11:01:03 AM) Michelle: How can one show verbal competency besides retaking the GMAT?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:02:16 AM) Xiaoyan: Email most likely, so please update your email address with us if it has changed.

GoBlue (Mar 17, 2005 11:02:46 AM) Jim: Is the waitlist ranked?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:02:52 AM) Zing: There is no need to show verbal competency. We already know this from your essays and interview.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:02:57 AM) BrianG, I suggest that you just focus on other parts of your application.

twfry (Mar 17, 2005 11:03:06 AM) Michele: What is the Ross format for the recommendations? I did not see it with my original application.

aps (Mar 17, 2005 11:03:18 AM) Jim: If we have already acknowledged our potential weaknesses in our application, does it make sense to do this again? Would you recommend that the supplemental essays focus on our strengths and updates instead?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:03:36 AM) GoBlue, we do not rank our wait list.

Eks (Mar 17, 2005 11:03:49 AM) Jim: Should alumni e-mail the letter of support at the mbawaitlist email address or send it by snail-mail?

michfan (Mar 17, 2005 11:04:00 AM) Mengdan: Does a waitlisted candidate get accepted only if someone similar drops out?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:04:27 AM) aps, I think that is a good approach since you have already acknowledged and addressed your weaknesses.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:04:55 AM) Eks, either medium is fine.

XiaoyanZHANG_CHINA (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:03 AM) Jim: How do you inform the admits from the waitlist for the first time, by call, email or web post?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:03 AM) Michfan: No, we don't look for apples to replace apples. There is always great diversity in our pool.

Dan (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:17 AM) Mengdan: Do you prefer any e-mailed essays (to mbawaitlist@umich.edu and copied to AD) be within a word document or text in an e-mail? Thanks!

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:38 AM) Twfry: The application PDF is still online. You can check there to get the Ross format.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:39 AM) Dan: either is fine!

andre alonzo (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:44 AM) Michele: How are my Consortium chances diminished by being waitlisted, if accepted in May?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:53 AM) XiaoyanZHANG_CHINA, we call each wait list directly. We will be in fast mode, so we ask for decisions quickly.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:07:00 AM) Andre: By "Consortium chances" are you referring to the Consortium fellowship?

alex (Mar 17, 2005 11:07:13 AM) Michele: Does the chance for the waitlisted applicants to be accepted come from those admits who will refuse your offers?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:07:46 AM) Alex: Yes.

Harish (Mar 17, 2005 11:08:07 AM) Jim: I have already interviewed on-campus. Would a second interview with either admission committee member or alum help strengthen my application?

vibhu (Mar 17, 2005 11:08:27 AM) Mengdan: The motorcycle club was/is based in New Delhi. I'm now living in Birmingham, UK. So haven't actually been riding for a while. I'm still in touch with everyone electronically - but its not the same. :-)

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:10:12 AM) Harish, if you already interview, there is no need for another interview.

manojs_mba (Mar 17, 2005 11:10:13 AM) Michele: What is AD?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:10:22 AM) Manojs: Associate Director.

loveUMich (Mar 17, 2005 11:10:56 AM) Michele: Should I retake the GMAT if my score is slightly below the average but was strong in the quant section but weak in the verbal section?

a_ravi (Mar 17, 2005 11:11:08 AM) Thanks to the school and the hosts for providing this enhanced experience for the waitlisted candidates. This commitment reinforces our choice of Ross as THE school to attend.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:11:21 AM) loveUMich: If your GMAT is below average it does not hurt to retake it.

Noah Bergman (Mar 17, 2005 11:11:39 AM) Michele: Is it possible for a waitlist candidate to visit campus and attend specific courses in areas they hope to concentrate? I believe this would help me to further articulate upon, and strengthen my understanding of, the specific concentrations I am interested in.

Guest (Mar 17, 2005 11:12:24 AM) Jim: How is it determined which applicants will be accepted off of the waitlist if there is no ranking?

mrak (Mar 17, 2005 11:12:47 AM) Michelle: Thanks to all the Adcom members (Jim, Mengan & Michelle) for their time and inputs. Is it okay to swing by and say Hi to you folks when I am on campus. Or do I need a prior appointment?

Guest (Mar 17, 2005 11:13:06 AM) >>Mengdan: I would like to explain the unique circumstances relating to my GPA. I didn't realize that making an academic transition, switching my major, effects your GPA in Japan. Do you think this kinds of information is ok as an additional information?

Hector S (Mar 17, 2005 11:13:08 AM) Jim: thank you for your comments.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:13:25 AM) Hector S, You are quite welcome!

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:13:51 AM) Noah Bergman: You may register to attend one of the courses open to visitors at: http://www.bus.umich.edu/Admissions/Mba/Tours/ClassListings.htm .

Linda Abraham (Mar 17, 2005 11:14:20 AM) Jim, I'm getting quite a few questions asking something along the line of how do you determine which candidates to accept from the waitlist given that the list isn't ranked?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:14:22 AM) Mrak: Please feel free to let the Front Desk know once you are here - we will be happy to say hi if we are around. No appointment needed!

chi27 (Mar 17, 2005 11:14:39 AM) Michele: Are any waitlisted applicants contacted before the mid-May through mid-June time-frames?

Guest (Mar 17, 2005 11:14:46 AM) Thanks all. Great questions and very helpful answers. Good luck fellow waitlisters!

Maggie (Mar 17, 2005 11:15:02 AM) Mengdan: one last question, if I submit an additional recommendation from my college professor, will that be equally evaluated?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:15:24 AM) Linda, Each AD is given the opportunity to submit candidates for my consideration based on their knowledge of the file. There is no ranking priority.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:15:27 AM) Chi27: Generally, we do not begin to review the waitlist until after Round 3 decisions have been made.

yogesh_agarwal (Mar 17, 2005 11:16:05 AM) Michele: I interviewed with an alumnus in my home city. Would a telephone interview with the adcom strengthen my application?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:16:25 AM) Yogesh_A: If you have already interviewed, there is no need for another interview.

Hector S (Mar 17, 2005 11:16:36 AM) Michele: What about scholarships for accepted waitlisted applicants? Does chances to get a scholarship diminish?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:16:39 AM) Maggie: It may not be as impactful as we already know your academic abilities. We recommend professional recommendations from your world instead.

nav_nayak (Mar 17, 2005 11:16:56 AM) Mengdan: I am currently doing an executive education program. Would the recommendation from my professor hold weight?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:17:33 AM) Nav-Nayak: might be somewhat relevant.

GoBlue (Mar 17, 2005 11:17:46 AM) Mengdan: Following up on Alex's question of waitlist chances, does that mean that waitlist candidates are not being evaluated with Round 3 applicants?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:17:59 AM) Hector S: Waitlisted applicants are considered for scholarships but the opportunity is not as extensive as it is for admitted students.

SYR (Mar 17, 2005 11:18:04 AM) Michele: I wanted to know the chances of being offered a consortium fellowship if accepted?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:18:55 AM) GoBlue: We may, but it would be unusual - we will start after Round 3 deadlines- mid May.

HCHUNG (Mar 17, 2005 11:19:22 AM) Mengdan: I noticed that the admission rate has increased over the years. Are less people applying to MBA programs, and will this improve the chances of being accepted of the waitlist this year?

Czerski (Mar 17, 2005 11:19:44 AM) Jim: Thanks for the advice. Should I let my AD know if I am planning on retaking the GMAT, or just resubmit score after taking them?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:20:37 AM) SYR: As with other waitlisted applicants, consortium applicants are considered for scholarships (fellowships) but the opportunity is not as extensive as it is for admitted students

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:20:42 AM) Czerski, you should let your AD know of your plans so we expect the higher score.

alex (Mar 17, 2005 11:20:43 AM) Michele, how many offers you have released so far?

nav_nayak (Mar 17, 2005 11:21:09 AM) Michele: How do I get the email address of my AD?

Anju (Mar 17, 2005 11:21:28 AM) Jim: I being an international candidate, am unable to visit the campus. Do you think my chances are not as good as those who do visit the UMich Campus?

vibhu (Mar 17, 2005 11:22:37 AM) Thank you Michigan staff for answering all my questions. Thank you to Linda and Accepted.com for hosting this session. It has been very useful for me.

Linda Abraham (Mar 17, 2005 11:22:43 AM) You're most welcome.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:22:52 AM) Anju, it is not essential that you visit the campus. We encourage that only because of the investment you are about to undertake, but it is not a requirement.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:23:11 AM) Nav_nayak: Send an e-mail to mbawaitlist@umich.edu with the AD's name in the subject line.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:23:15 AM) HCHUNG: Across the B-School industry, applications have been down during the past few years. But at Michigan, our application pool actually has been even stronger lately. We are very pleased with the quality that we see. We've admitted the same number right now as we did this time last year.

Anju (Mar 17, 2005 11:23:29 AM) Jim: What are the chances of Financial Aid being offered to those admitted after being waitlisted?

Patrick Shih-Pan Chao (Mar 17, 2005 11:23:37 AM) Mengdan: Is there a deadline for waitlisted applicants to visit the school, so that our visit would not conflict with current students preparing for finals?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:24:35 AM) Patrick: no deadline - anytime is welcome!

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:24:36 AM) Anju, there is a chance of financial aid for waitlisted applicants, but not as great as for those admitted earlier on.

alex (Mar 17, 2005 11:24:42 AM) Jim how many offers you have released so far?

michfan (Mar 17, 2005 11:25:04 AM) Mengdan: Would a recommendation from a professor at University of Michigan be an added advantage?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:25:28 AM) Alex, I prefer not to release an exact number. Let's just say that the number of offers is the same as last year at the same time.

Anju (Mar 17, 2005 11:25:40 AM) Jim: Does Ross help international students on visa matters, as it might be very late if the decisions come out by June?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:25:56 AM) Michfan: Not necessarily, in fact recommendations from professors may not be as impactful.

chi27 (Mar 17, 2005 11:26:12 AM) When do the offers you have already extended expire? When is the deadline to accept/decline an offer?

ross_wl (Mar 17, 2005 11:26:54 AM) Mengdan: Do waitlisted candidates have an AD who's their advocate? I know other schools who have a similar policy.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:27:01 AM) Chi27, the offers we have out now must be replied to by April 30. For round 3 admits, they will have until June 15 to reply.

raju_gupta (Mar 17, 2005 11:27:09 AM) Thanks Jim, Mengdan, Michele for your great inputs. Special thanks to Linda for moderating this informative session. Getting answers quickly, like this, certainly helps to reduce much confusion and anxiety during this crucial time.

HCHUNG (Mar 17, 2005 11:27:17 AM) Jim: I'm on the board of an organization. Would a recommendation letter from the executive director of the organization be helpful?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:27:24 AM) Anju: We will try our best to expedite, though visa situation is really out of our control.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:28:02 AM) HCHUNG, Yes, such a letter of support would be helpful.

michfan (Mar 17, 2005 11:28:11 AM) Mengdan: Would you pick someone with similar demographics from the waitlist to those who have not taken up the offer?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:28:31 AM) Ross: Yes your AD is your advocate - be nice to them!

vishal jain (Mar 17, 2005 11:29:19 AM) When do the classes for the 2005 admits commence?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:29:25 AM) Michfan: We do not replace orange with an orange - we have enough diversity in the pool.

Dan (Mar 17, 2005 11:29:26 AM) Mengdan: Would a recommendation from a peer/co-worker be impactful? Particularly if this person was a team member on a project I discussed in the essays I submitted within the application? (I've resisted using co-workers for recommendations.)

HCHUNG (Mar 17, 2005 11:29:46 AM) Michele: How are AD's assigned candidates? I met my AD at an application workshop. Do they get to pick and choose who they want to represent?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:29:57 AM) Vishal Jain, classes start on September 6.

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:30:18 AM) Dan: You are right co-worker may not be as impactful.

Anju (Mar 17, 2005 11:30:34 AM) Jim: What is the recommended frequency of contact with my AD?

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:30:35 AM) HChung: AD's are responsible for specific regions of the country and the world.

vibhu (Mar 17, 2005 11:30:43 AM) Michele: How do I know who my AD is? Should all additional material be marked for the attention of my AD?

HCHUNG (Mar 17, 2005 11:30:46 AM) This was a great session. Thank you, Jim, Mengdan, Michelle and Linda for a great chat.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:30:58 AM) Vibhu: The AD signed your letter.

SebastianReyes (Mar 17, 2005 11:31:01 AM) Hi Jim, since you'll start reviewing internationals, are they compared with the international already admitted?

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:31:20 AM) Anju, use good judgment. Try to maintain enough contact to express interest, but without becoming perceived as a pest.

Czerski (Mar 17, 2005 11:31:25 AM) Jim: Thank you. Since I do not want to flood my AD with too much info, would another letter from current management be a better choice or one from a manager on a previous engagement that has not yet written one?

E.Titel (Mar 17, 2005 11:31:45 AM) Mengdan: I'm so sorry for being late - One question on visa issues: if you decide to accept the international student from the waitlist in May or June, will there be enough time to pass all visa procedures?

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:32:19 AM) ET: There should be, but June would be the latest.

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:32:23 AM) SebastianReyes, we do not compare applicant files. Each decision is made based upon individual merits. Buena suerte!

Linda Abraham (Mar 17, 2005 11:32:39 AM) Thank you again all for participating this evening. Special thanks to Jim, Megdan, and Michele for taking the time to virtually meet with you, provide this information, and make this process as transparent and humane as possible.

Linda Abraham (Mar 17, 2005 11:32:51 AM) The Michigan waitlist FAQ is at http://www.bus.umich.edu/Admissions/waitlist.htm . It is extensive and informative. Use it.

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:33:06 AM) Czerski: One from a manager from a previous engagement is a better choice if your current manager has already submitted a letter.

Linda Abraham (Mar 17, 2005 11:33:07 AM) Good luck with your applications!

MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:33:40 AM) Good luck to everyone!

JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:33:41 AM) Good l uck to each of you! Hope to see you here in Ann Arbor later this year!

MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:33:43 AM) Thank you, Linda! It was fun!

Linda Abraham (Mar 17, 2005 11:34:04 AM) You're all most welcome. Most thanks go to the Michigan adcom for having this.

Jimmy A. (Mar 17, 2005 11:34:39 AM) Thank you to everyone!
