Vibhu: Applications are about the same as last year and selectivity is as competitive as ever. Victor Lesley (Mar 17, 2005 10:43:08 AM)
Thanks Michele. Anju (Mar 17, 2005 10:43:21 AM)
Michele: Do think retaking TOEFL is advisable? Mine is below average for the class of 2004. MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:43:28 AM)
Round 1 and 2 Deadline is April 30. Round 3 is June 15. vikram (Mar 17, 2005 10:43:47 AM)
Jim: In addition to strengthening weak areas of an application, is a waitlisted candidate accepted in order to add a unique perspective to the admitted class? MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:43:56 AM)
Kschad: It is still quite possible if history is of any indication. We had admits off from the waitlist in late summer. misa (Mar 17, 2005 10:44:32 AM)
Mendgan: I read that recommendations from faculty are usually have less of an impact. Does it mean the academic aspects are not included or does it mean the information from the recommendations must be old? What's problem with academic recommendations? MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:45:09 AM)
Anju: If your TOEFL is below the average, then it would not hurt for you to take it again. Jimmy A. (Mar 17, 2005 10:45:09 AM)
Michele: I interviewed with USC for my Consortium interview, since I live in the Los Angeles area. However, since Michigan is my first choice in the Consortium, should I have interviewed directly with Ross instead? Can I still interview with Ross, although I already interviewed at USC for the Consortium? JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:45:21 AM)
GoBlue, I would encourage you to do all that you can to get admitted from our waitlist. If we cannot give you a decision by the time you need it, then you have to do whatever you think is right for you. In some cases, that may mean accepting another offer. andre alonzo (Mar 17, 2005 10:45:38 AM)
Jim: Would taking a supplementary class be of benefit at this time? MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:46:07 AM)
Jimmy A: We will accept the interview that you did at USC. It is not necessary for you to interview with Ross. MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:46:08 AM)
Ross: There are about 300 currently, perhaps about 100 would be admitted. And yes, there are always a few who forgo the waitlist. manojs_mba (Mar 17, 2005 10:46:18 AM)
Michele: Don't you think that wait listed applicants from the first round are at an advantage compared to wait listed applicants from second round as they have more time to prepare?? MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:47:05 AM)
Manojs: I don't think that there is any advantage. JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:47:07 AM)
Andre, taking an additional course may help. For example, if the quant portion of your GMAT is lower, you can take and ace a Calculus or stats course. Also, retaking the GMAT and coming up with a higher score may help your chances if you think that is an issue. Douglas Lopes (Mar 17, 2005 10:47:19 AM)
Jim, I am very committed to go to Michigan. How can I express my commitment? Please give an example. yogesh_agarwal (Mar 17, 2005 10:47:38 AM)
Michele: For international students, a mid-May/early June decision would mean very less time for visa processing. Does Ross help students admitted from the waitlist get their VISA quicker? MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:48:29 AM)
Misa: Academics are important - we evaluate your academics from your school work (undergrad, grad work if any) and your GMAT, so recommendations from professors may not be necessary. Use Recommendations for your professional side. Undral (Mar 17, 2005 10:48:39 AM)
Mengdan: When you begin reviewing waitlisted candidates (mid-May), do you notify them as soon as the decision is reached OR do you wait until you made decision on all waitlisted candidates and notify at once (end of June)? MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:49:16 AM)
Yogesh: We understand the visa process and try to get out international decisions as soon as we can. Maggie (Mar 17, 2005 10:49:34 AM)
Michele: Since I had no opportunity to be interviewed, is there a way to have an interview before mid-May? JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:49:42 AM)
Douglas, I cannot provide an example without having your application in front of me. I can only suggest that you review the information for Waitlisted applicants that we linked to earlier in the chat. Then review your application against those general guidelines to determine if there are areas of your application that could be improved. Then update the application (essays, GMAT retake, additional recommendation letters, updates on achievements at work, etc.) and send it to us. Jeff A. (Mar 17, 2005 10:50:06 AM)
By the way, thanks for hosting this chat as well as the application workshops back in December. It really helps us applicants a great deal and lets us get a glimpse of the collaborative Michigan culture. MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:50:32 AM)
Undral: Yes, we do try to notify as soon as possible so you can prepare to come here! MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:50:34 AM)
Maggie: You can schedule an interview via the website. The address is rossintv@umich.edu. Shruti (Mar 17, 2005 10:50:55 AM)
Mengdan: You mentioned that an additional recommendation letter would be useful if it had new information. What if I don't know what was written in my initial recommendation letters? JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:51:18 AM)
Jeff A. , we appreciate the complement. We try to do as much as possible to provide understanding of the application process, and what we look for in a successful application. MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:51:18 AM)
Maggie: You can schedule your interview via our website. The e-mail address is rossintv@umich.edu . raju_gupta (Mar 17, 2005 10:51:20 AM)
Thanks Mengdan. MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:51:30 AM)
Shruti: I would check with the recommender... ross_wl (Mar 17, 2005 10:51:50 AM)
Mengdan: Is there a particular format in which our recommendation must be submitted? MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:52:17 AM)
Ross: no set format - email or letter would be fine. Damon Dance (Mar 17, 2005 10:52:18 AM)
Michelle: Should additional recommendations follow the standard Ross format or can it be written differently? MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:52:18 AM)
Damon: It is helpful if they follow the Ross format. mrak (Mar 17, 2005 10:52:34 AM)
Mengdan: If one were to request early decision by late-April because of impending deadlines from other schools to accept their offer, will it negatively affect the decision being made by Ross, particularly given that the candidate prefers Ross more than other schools? MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:53:08 AM)
Mrak: Certainly not. Actually you might want to negotiate with the other schools about your response deadline. nav_nayak (Mar 17, 2005 10:53:31 AM)
Jim: Would you consider a GMAT score of 690 below the Ross average? The waitlist FAQ website says 700 as the average whereas the link 'average' says 690. a_ravi (Mar 17, 2005 10:53:39 AM)
Michelle: If I were to come to visit Michigan and present additional materials in person, can I meet with the adcom members? MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:53:39 AM)
A_Ravi: Unfortunately, we don't have the resources to meet with waitlisted applicants in person. Undral (Mar 17, 2005 10:53:58 AM)
Mengdan: I meant interview to receive a visa to come to the US. That is why I was curious as to when I should expect to hear the decision. However, speaking of personal interview with the member of Admissions Committee, I would love to do one if that helps, however, I am back in Mongolia (currently under work and family constraints) and the only way to interview would be over the phone. Anju (Mar 17, 2005 10:54:15 AM)
Michele - I do suppose rewriting/additional essays would benefit me greatly, however, I am yet to understand how they shall be presented. I want to know whether sending additional essays via email to the Associate Dir. would be fine. JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:54:41 AM)
nav_nayak, The average for the admitted class so far is 700. There are several admits with scores lower than that, and several with higher scores. The GMAT is only one of several factors we review for. Hector S (Mar 17, 2005 10:54:47 AM)
Jim: What needs to happen for a waitlist applicant to be accepted? Harish (Mar 17, 2005 10:55:43 AM)
Mengdan: I have already submitted two recommendations from my supervisors, one is my direct supervisor, a director, and another is VP of my division who directs my activities due to the nature of my work. Would you recommend getting another recommendation from a senior, with whom I closely work, or do you recommend that I get a external recommendation? nav_nayak (Mar 17, 2005 10:56:00 AM)
Jim: Are waitlisted candidates considered for financial aid/scholarships? MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:56:16 AM)
Undral: We do phone interviews - please reach out to our interview office soon. We try to make decisions on most international waitlists by June in light of visa application time. MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:56:18 AM)
Anju: You may send additional essays to mbawaitlist@umich.edu and copy the AD if you like. Either way, the process is the same in that the essay will be printed and added to your file for consideration later in mid-May when we begin to review our waitlisted applicants. vibhu (Mar 17, 2005 10:56:23 AM)
Mengdan: Are recommendations from colleagues and/or clients looked upon favorably? I was involved in a motorcycle club for 6 years - would getting a recommendation from the president of the club add anything to my application? JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:56:27 AM)
Hector, you need to provide enough additional supportive information to provide a basis for admission from the wait list. This can take on may forms. For example, GMAT retake, additional essays, additional recommendation letters, updates from work, etc. loveUMich (Mar 17, 2005 10:57:00 AM)
Michele: If I completed an alumni interview but have not visited the campus, would visiting the campus enhance my application? How should I communicate my campus visit to the adcom? JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:57:28 AM)
nav_nayak, yes we do consider waitlist admits for scholarships/financial aid. But the opportunities are not as great, especially for scholarships. MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:58:02 AM)
Harrish: Only if it's relevant and value-added. Too many recommendation letter may not be as helpful. External ones are fine if it speaks to your outside involvement, not your work experience. Anju (Mar 17, 2005 10:58:15 AM)
Jim - There is an active Ross alumnus in the city where I live. Do you think it would be feasible for me to schedule an interview with him? I am not sure I can present myself as good on the phone as in person. Shruti (Mar 17, 2005 10:59:10 AM)
Thanks Mengdan and Michele! XiaoyanZHANG_CHINA (Mar 17, 2005 10:59:23 AM)
Mengdan: Which method will be used to notify those admitted from the waitlist, phone, email or web post? JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:59:28 AM)
Anju, you should reach out to him to see if he can interview you. It would certainly be more expedient that trying to come to Ann Arbor for the interview. It is weighted equally to a face to face interview here in Ann Arbor! BrianG (Mar 17, 2005 10:59:36 AM)
Jim: If I have already addressed my perceived weakness in my application (low GPA) in the optional essay and through additional courses, would it be advisable to mention it again during this waitlist period or just focus on other parts of my application? MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 10:59:42 AM)
Vibhu: That would be fine - are you still involved now though? Undral (Mar 17, 2005 11:00:18 AM)
Mengdan: Thank you for your help. And yes, I agree with other candidates, this chat is very helpful to us all. MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:00:56 AM)
loveUMich: Visiting campus might enhance your passion to attend Ross. This, in turn, may help you to articulate your reasons for wanting to attend. You should send an e-mail to mbawaitlist@umich.edu with the AD name in the subject line (don't worry...we will get the e-mail). Let us know you are coming as we'd like to stop out to say hello during your visit. zing (Mar 17, 2005 11:01:03 AM)
Michelle: How can one show verbal competency besides retaking the GMAT? MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:02:16 AM)
Xiaoyan: Email most likely, so please update your email address with us if it has changed. GoBlue (Mar 17, 2005 11:02:46 AM)
Jim: Is the waitlist ranked? MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:02:52 AM)
Zing: There is no need to show verbal competency. We already know this from your essays and interview. JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:02:57 AM)
BrianG, I suggest that you just focus on other parts of your application. twfry (Mar 17, 2005 11:03:06 AM)
Michele: What is the Ross format for the recommendations? I did not see it with my original application. aps (Mar 17, 2005 11:03:18 AM)
Jim: If we have already acknowledged our potential weaknesses in our application, does it make sense to do this again? Would you recommend that the supplemental essays focus on our strengths and updates instead? JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:03:36 AM)
GoBlue, we do not rank our wait list. Eks (Mar 17, 2005 11:03:49 AM)
Jim: Should alumni e-mail the letter of support at the mbawaitlist email address or send it by snail-mail? michfan (Mar 17, 2005 11:04:00 AM)
Mengdan: Does a waitlisted candidate get accepted only if someone similar drops out? JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:04:27 AM)
aps, I think that is a good approach since you have already acknowledged and addressed your weaknesses. JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:04:55 AM)
Eks, either medium is fine. XiaoyanZHANG_CHINA (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:03 AM)
Jim: How do you inform the admits from the waitlist for the first time, by call, email or web post? MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:03 AM)
Michfan: No, we don't look for apples to replace apples. There is always great diversity in our pool. Dan (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:17 AM)
Mengdan: Do you prefer any e-mailed essays (to mbawaitlist@umich.edu and copied to AD) be within a word document or text in an e-mail? Thanks! MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:38 AM)
Twfry: The application PDF is still online. You can check there to get the Ross format. MengdanChuRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:39 AM)
Dan: either is fine! andre alonzo (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:44 AM)
Michele: How are my Consortium chances diminished by being waitlisted, if accepted in May? JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:05:53 AM)
XiaoyanZHANG_CHINA, we call each wait list directly. We will be in fast mode, so we ask for decisions quickly. MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:07:00 AM)
Andre: By "Consortium chances" are you referring to the Consortium fellowship? alex (Mar 17, 2005 11:07:13 AM)
Michele: Does the chance for the waitlisted applicants to be accepted come from those admits who will refuse your offers? MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:07:46 AM)
Alex: Yes. Harish (Mar 17, 2005 11:08:07 AM)
Jim: I have already interviewed on-campus. Would a second interview with either admission committee member or alum help strengthen my application? vibhu (Mar 17, 2005 11:08:27 AM)
Mengdan: The motorcycle club was/is based in New Delhi. I'm now living in Birmingham, UK. So haven't actually been riding for a while. I'm still in touch with everyone electronically - but its not the same. :-) JimHayesRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:10:12 AM)
Harish, if you already interview, there is no need for another interview. manojs_mba (Mar 17, 2005 11:10:13 AM)
Michele: What is AD? MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:10:22 AM)
Manojs: Associate Director. loveUMich (Mar 17, 2005 11:10:56 AM)
Michele: Should I retake the GMAT if my score is slightly below the average but was strong in the quant section but weak in the verbal section? a_ravi (Mar 17, 2005 11:11:08 AM)
Thanks to the school and the hosts for providing this enhanced experience for the waitlisted candidates. This commitment reinforces our choice of Ross as THE school to attend. MicheleThompsonRoss (Mar 17, 2005 11:11:21 AM)
loveUMich: If your GMAT is below average it does not hurt to retake it. Noah Bergman (Mar 17, 2005 11:11:39 AM)
Michele: Is it possible for a waitlist candidate to visit campus and attend specific courses in areas they hope to concentrate? I believe this would help me to further articulate upon, and strengthen my understanding of, the specific concentrations I am interested in. Guest (Mar 17, 2005 11:12:24 AM)
Jim: How is it determined which applicants will be accepted off of the waitlist if there is no ranking? mrak (Mar 17, 2005 11:12:47 AM)
Michelle: Thanks to all the Adcom members (Jim, Mengan & Michelle) for their time and inputs. Is it okay to swing by and say Hi to you folks when I am on campus. Or do I need a prior appointment? Guest (Mar 17, 2005 11:13:06 AM)
>>Mengdan: I would like to explain the unique circumstances relating to my GPA. I didn't realize that making an academic transition, switching my major, effects your GPA in Japan. Do you think this kinds of information is ok as an additional information? |
