The Learning Approach
At Ivey, we take a learn-by-doing approach to executive development, rather than a learn-by-listening. We recognize that most learning is achieved through experience. The case-study method is the closest way to experiencing a situation without actually being there. This method exposes participants to real life cases with real life decisions that need to be made. This gives our participants the opportunity to test their new knowledge and to experiment with their decision-making abilities in a risk-free learning environment.
Case-Study Method
Participants begin by working through case studies on their own, analyzing data, and developing their own ideas.
They then get together with their learning team (study groups) and discuss the case in-depth.
Finally, they gather with the rest of their class and a professor for a lively discussion in which different ideas and thoughts are explored This learning method is based on learning discussions not lectures. Participants learn how to sift through information and find the data that matters. They learn how to think and make effective decisions and develop practical action plans.
Study Groups:
The study groups vary from case to case. This allows everyone in the class to get to know each other, but more importantly they learn from a variety of different people with different experiences from different industries.
Many participants say they learn as much from their classmates as they do from the faculty. Since participants come from a variety of industries and functional areas, there抯 likely to be someone in their group with the specialized expertise needed to deal with almost any case.
Many Schools use the case-study method, but few have as much skill and experience as Ivey:
Ivey is the second largest producer of cases in the world and has the largest library of Asian based cases.
Many of our professors who teach our programs write the cases that they teach. This means the learning experience at Ivey is richer and more textured than you would get anywhere else.
Ivey also teaches professors from other institutions how to teach using the case-study method through our case-teaching and case-learning workshops.
