后面的解释打错了两个单词，重新打一遍现在   because Neanderthals ''disapeared'' the verb describing their apparent abilities cannot be present tense, so as equipped must be changed to ''to have been equipped''

补充一点,换个思路,如果不知道appear as这个用法（我猜测近两年的考试这种单独考idiom也不多，而且要考，肯定不会考那么简单的 ），也可以做
1. 看整句，知道Neanderthals 后来是消失了，所以之前equip的时态，应该用完成时比较合适，因为需要表示曾经的含义。
2. appear的时态呢，可以表明，Neanderthals现在看起来怎么怎么样。
3. to do如果没有歧义的话比for doing更能表达目的的意思。

明显equipped省略了they are ，因为they were是不能够省略的，而这个时态与could不符合
