楼上的意思是这边是省略的问题，the first trenches that were cut into... ,这边的that不是在从句中作主语呢？

that在这里是作主语 过去分词修饰的时候中间是不可以加逗号的，如果加了逗号，后面要用which做关系代词，那就是非限制性从句了，that引导的是限制性定语从句
