 很简单啊，加了were就知道是和主语做比较，不加就可以能是与Europeans做比较

个人意见:

BS的I被孤立起來不跟E接觸比NP和NA的A或I要長很多。所以省略的是NP和NA的A或I(被孤立起來不跟E接觸),那麽加了個were可能就能表示出省略的部分.
