[转帖]8.20 JJ

hmmm.., 说实话考的不如我预料的好, 不过还可以, 对得起自己和支持我的家人和朋友, 我还是少说废话, jj:

awa:

Issue:

"It is difficult for people to achieve professional success without sacrificing important aspects of a fulfilling personal life"

argument:

The following editorial appeared in the Elm City paper.

"The construction last year of a shopping mail in downtown Oak City was a mistake. Since the mall has opened, a number of local businesses have closed, and the downtown area suffers from an acute parking shortage, and arrests for crime and vagrancy have increased in the nearby Oak City Park. Elm City should pay attention to the example of the Oak City mall and deny the application to bulid a shopping mall in Elm City."

Math (not in the following order, I'm writing them as I remember them):

1. N is the sum of all the odd positive integers less than 50, and M is the sum of the all the even positive integers less than 50, what is N - M?

2. DS: what is the average of a, b, and c?

1) a + b + 3c = 17;

2) a + b - c = 1;

3. DS: a number x = 5*(10^n) + m, and x / 3 has remainder r, what is r?

1) n = 5;

2) m = 1;

4. Machine M can finish a job in 12 hours by itself; if machine M finishes 2/3 of the same job, and then machine N, whose work rate is 1/10 of that of machine N finishes the rest of the job, what is the total amount of time that took these two machines to finish the job?

5. is x > y?

1) x^2 > y^2

2) y - y^2 > 0

6. if x, y, a are numbers, is x > y?

1) x + a > x - a;

2) ax > ay;

7. some girl is buying apples and oranges; apples costs .4 apiece where orange costs .6 apiece; if the girl bought 10 of apples and oranges, and the average cost is 56 cents, how many oranges does she have to put back in order to have an average cost of 52 cents for the remaining fruits?

8. A guy sent an order of sofas and loveseats(I'M NOT KIDDING, IT REALLY SAID "LOVESEATS"), if the total cost was $3800, how many sofa did he buy?

1) sofa costs $800 and loveseat costs $300;

2) there was more than one sofa in the order;

9. A tax of 6 percent is charged to adult clothing, and no tax is charged for kids clothing, if a dude bought 149.00 of clothing, how much did he spend on kids clothing?

1) the kids clothing cost 43 dollars more than adults clothing;

2) if the same percent of tax is charged for kids clothing, the total would be (i forgot)

10. Two squares x and y, asks for the ratio of the perimeter of x to the perimeter of y

1) one side of x is a diaglino of y

2) the ratio of one side of x to one side of y is square root of 2

I just remembered another one:

you have a rectangle of size 15 feet by 12 feet, if we want to fit it with squares with a side of 9 inches, how many we can fit in such rectangle? (1 foot = 12 inches)

Verb:

rc:

one is about sometimes company’s heavy focus on development will actually hurt it; because even if you can make new products and without proper marketing and bunch of other skills, the company won’t be able to protect its new products from competitors, who can easily copy and be more successful. (something like that, pretty easy, the first one I had)

two I think was about this guy who had an theory about groups of people. And another guy who took this theory and explained why back people moved to the north. And the author thinks his(the second guy) arguments are not sufficient because the evidence he cited could be interpreted in some other way.

One of them is about fish and fossils, which totally kicked my ass, it was like 70 lines long and I had 20 minutes for the last 10 questions, so I just totally clicked on random.

sc:

...something contains more ...., than does something else...

cr:

1. the question about monks and fish bones

2. departments have heads retiring, and the number of heads will decease, ask for reason

3. sight-seeing helicopters keep crashing in some island, and the government increased the max height for these helicopters, since it's safer to land for broken helicopters to land from a higher distance, but the crashes will increase, ask why:

I chose because the higher the max limit is, the lower the tourists want the helicopters to fly.

4. Cable company who’s been granted the right to serve certain community by the government, won’t have to worry about unstable costumers; so the only ways for the cable company to gain more profits is either to cut costs or ask government to raise its charges. Ask which of the following if the most useful to assess the argument

I chose "whether the company can cut costs under a stable population of costumers"

5. Dave: water-jet boats are safe, because they r owned by 35% people who water jet, and only 10% of the insurance claims is associated with such boats.

Adam: it is not true since these boats are cheap, usually people do not insure them.

Which of the following is the best argument for Dave to counter Adam’s argument?

I chose "because when such boats involved in an accident, the other boats are always more expensive, thus the owners of these boats will always file for claims for insurance.

不好意思只记住这么点, 我现在头还有点晕晕的, 昨天晚上根本就没睡, 而且今天还喝了不少红牛, 所以手还在抖, 等我缓过神来可能还能想起多一点...
