131. “We can learn more about a society by observing how its people spend their leisure time than by observing them at work.”
Not in proper GMAT format but below is quick brain stroming.
At work people are not what they naturally are, people wrapped around rule, regulations and work ethics becasue of which they act and work different to their natural way.
Simple example, people always use dust bin at their work even for smallest piece of paper but when then same people doesn't care when they are at part, cinema on holidays. Though there are regulations in society to but they are not forced, they are more like guideline. No government, No efforts can maintain cleaniness if people doesn't care about it.
draw a example from my current work place, almost everyone in my office including me listen to music while working using headphone and if someone is listen to loud music, he / she is asked to slow the volume down. But then when I saw someone listening to load music in underground train or bus I or anybody else do not ask him/her to slow down because that's how it is. Some might argue that we spend most of our time at work but still it is difficult to judge a society if people are not acting naturally. people behave properly at work, people are very well-mannered at work, they do not shout. some might argue that if someone is not co-operative at leisure time than he/she will remain co-operative at work also, this might be true but as I said ealier that every work place has its own culture, own rules and laws and if one does not fits into that curlture he/she is thrown out, so even if the person is not co-operative, he/she will try to be co-operative at work but thats not true other way.
132 . Governments should not be responsible for regulating businesses and other organizations. Instead, society would benefit if the organizations themselves assumed responsibility for establishing and enforcing their own standards and regulations.
Some people believe that organizations themselves should assume the responsibilities for establishing their own standards and regulations , however, I believe that the government should be responsible for establishing and enforcing the standards for businesses and other organizations . One reason for my belief is that business organizations are primarily driven by the motive of accumulating profits , and establishing standards and regulations , which do not add to the profits, are secondary concerns for them .The occurrence of Salmonella bacteria outbreaks was common place in the fast food industry in the early sixties .They resulted primarily from the shoddy food handling practices , and were finally brought under control by the government setting up strict food hygiene standards . Another reason for my belief is that standards and regulations become meaningful only when they are imposed by an impartial body which holds credibility with business organizations .For example , regulations created by one business organization may be considered by another as providing undue business advantage to the creator of the standards. However ,the government can become the impartial regulatory body , which business organizations can trust. Finally , a regulatory body should have the means to impose the standards that it creates .Only the government , with the vast manpower and the finances at its disposal ,has the means and the finances to impose the regulations . Some might argue that the governmental regulations might impede the competitiveness of the businesses and hence harm them .Therefore it is very important that the regulations are created by keeping in mind the interests of both the businesses and the society . In conclusion , I believe that the society would benefit more if the government takes over the responsibility of establishing and imposing the standards and regulations .
