答案选E,但是But作为连词后面能没有谓语吗？官方解释上说 "but without success”这一部分成为了修饰前面一句话的状语，实在是困惑了，but还能这么用？求解释！！！

答案应该在CE里面选，C是可以排除的，因为it是多余的，不过but这个同困惑；从这里判断应该是做介词，不过这种用法没见过相关例句，同等待高人。

连词应该跟完整的句子啊，搞不懂这个了...

but后面可以连接单词，短语，分句，句子等，举个简单例子，It was a sunny but not very warm day.
所以这里后面接介宾短语做状语没什么问题。
