今天发现了一篇好文,说的是中英文的思维差异。个人觉得不错而且对于备考GRE和GMAT阅读的同学也有益。记得我在上课时曾经跟各位说过三个意思:
1. 读GRE和GMAT文章时重点应该放在前半段。
2. 此类文章中喜欢:“先结论后举例”的模式
“However, a number of features that are characteristic of wind-pollinated plants reduce pollen waste. For example, many wind-pollinated species fail to release pollen when wind speeds are low or when humid conditions prevail.”
3. 此类文章中喜欢:“先结果后原因”的模式。如:
“In sum, Gutman’s study is significant because it offers a closely reasoned and original explanation of some of the slaves’ achievements, one that correctly emphasizes the resources that slaves themselves possessed.”
再如:“This taboo against cousins’ marrying is important, argues Gutman, because it is one of many indications of a strong awareness among slaves of an extended kinship network.”

大家想不都清楚东方人和西方人的思维上有很大差异。举个简单的例子,拿中医和西医来说,同样是感冒发烧,西医就直接给你开退烧药,中医就得看你是风寒还是风热,有时候都不开药,直接扎个针灸拔个火罐,好了!看出来了吧,西方人和东方人的差别。西方人讲究头疼医头脚疼医脚,直来直去;东方人则是迂回着,委婉着,最后才到重点。
很多同学在写托福作文的时候没有注意到东西方人的语言差异,往往分数不理想。大家往往按照自己固有的思维去写作,把这种思维习惯带到新的语言里去。也许平时在咱们自己的地盘见到老外,这么说几句无伤大雅,可真要到了国外,就要吃亏了。
以下是我的同学找到的一些比较有用的关于思维方式和写作的例子,跟大家分享一下,算是在考托路上和大家共同进步了。
由于英美人的思维方式很直接,他们更习惯于从general到specific,从summarize到exemplify,从whole到respective。如果使用中文表达,我们更讲究前因后果。
比如我们会这样表达:足球运动员必须能不停地奔跑,有时得用头顶球,撞别人或被别人撞,必须忍受双脚和肌肉的疼痛,所以说,足球运动是一项难度大的运动。 而如果用英文,则会这样说:Soccer is a difficult sport.A player must be able to run steadily without rest.Sometimes a player must hit the ball with his or her head.Players must be willing to bang into and be banged into by others.They must put up with aching feet and sore muscles. |
