请教一个there be的语法问题
我最近看到Manhattan 语法部分 写了一个wrong sentence: There IS a young man and an older woman at the bus stop.
书上说应该用复数，are.
但是我记得there be有就近原则。
比如：There is a pen, two books and many pencils on the table.
不知道there be的就近原则到底什么时候适用？
