88. The Emperor Augustus, it appears, commissioned an idealized sculpture portraint, the features of which are (so unrealistic as to constitute) what one scholar calls an " artificial face"
(A)
(B) so unrealistic they constituted
(C) so unrealistic that they have constituted
(D) unrealistic enough so that they constitute
(E) unrealistic enough so as to constitute

Why C is wrong. I also don't know about the usage of "so....as to"
Who can help me wiht these?
作者: justag    时间: 2003-1-6 05:07

c is wrong because the use of "have constituted". By that, tt seems the features have constituted ...and this action has been completed (i.e. the features don't constitute ...any more). If c is "so unrealistic that they constitute" then it's ok. But the subjects of "unrealistic" and "constitute" are the same ("features"), you can surely use the structure of "so..as to..".

renali: please spend some time reading all the posts on this board, you will find them quite helpful 'coz so many similiar and confusing questions have been answered quite well in earlier posts. Those posts helped me a lot, definitely

关于so...as to的用法:

1.so...(adj.)...as to ...(be adj.)[em26]

e.g.: You are so generous as to be unbelievable to some strangers.

ETS原题:
Climatic shifts are (so gradual as to be indistinguishable) at first from ordinary fluctuations in the weather.
(A) so gradual as to be indistinguishable[em11]
(B) so gradual they can be indistinguishable
(C) so gradual that they are unable to be distinguished
(D) gradual enough not to be distinguishable
(E) gradual enough so that one cannot distinguish them

2.so...(adj.)...as to ...(do sth.)[em26]

e.g.: She was so kind as to phone for a taxi for me. (OALECD第1440页原例.)

OG 88.
The Emperor Augustus, it appears, commissioned an idealized sculpture portrait, the features of which are (so unrealistic as to constitute) what one scholar calls an " artificial face"
(A) so unrealistic as to constitute[em11]
(B) so unrealistic they constituted
(C) so unrealistic that they have constituted
(D) unrealistic enough so that they constitute
(E) unrealistic enough so as to constitute

3. 注意:ETS常考so...as to和so...that的区别:[em26]

1). so...as to常修饰adj.短语,作状语,其逻辑主语等于主句主语,通常用于一般性单句(单一主谓句)中;

2). so...that可以修饰adv./adj.短语,做状语,通常用于主从复合句中,不能修饰n.,so...从句若提前,一般需要倒装。
