The growth of the railroads led to the abolition of local times, which was determined by when the sun reached the observer's meridian and differing from city to city, and to the establishment of regional times.
(A)which was determined by when the sun reached the observer's meridian and differing
(B)which was determined by when the sun reached the observer's meridian and which differed
(C)which were determined by when the sun reached the observer's meridian and differing
(D)determined by when the sun reached the observer's meridian and differed
(E)determined by when the sun reached the observer's meridian and differing
问题:答案选E,可我觉得C似乎更好,因为E感觉“determined”可能修饰前面整个句子,但C则很清楚修饰“ local times”作者: openview 时间: 2002-12-17 15:10
It's clear that the clause or prases describe local times.
For C, which were determined... and (which) differed... should be ok (please refer to choice B).You won't argue "which clause" can be followed by phrases to describe the same entity, right? So, differing is not right. Moreover, GMAT emphasizes parallelism, the second which is preferred (just like the case of multiple that clauses).
For E, it's just two phrases, one is in the format of -ed and the other
-ing.It's easy to determine whether to choose ed or ing, right?
Hehe, I did this problem wrong the first time and now think it right, I guess
