Please take a look at the highlighted words below, and try to fet the feel.

Those with a cynical turn of mind might "wonder whether the new corporation (which is) eager for profit, had started" the rumor that caused its competitor to declare bankruptcy.  

I think wounder 和speculate can be exchanged here, but that is not the issue in this question.
