我那个版本写的答案是C. 很多人也众说纷纭。这句的确比较难。大家可以再讨论

就是说应该选A咯？这里的dissipate作及物动词，prevented修饰sound，而C里面prevented修饰的是acoustic energy，逻辑好像错了
而且C中prevented by 中间插入别的成分，难免引起歧义

我也找了好久，这个是我想到的唯一的解释

nytimes原居上dissipate是vt,
Sound can travel through water for enormous distances, prevented from dissipating its acoustic energy by boundaries in the ocean created by water layers of differing temperatures and densities.

prevented状语意思相当于
Boundaries prevented sound from dissipating (vt) its energy.

很多人讨论时如果还把dissipate当vt，那么这里边B可能是一个蹩脚的答案.但是c 中dissipate是vi，很多字典都有.

C中独立主格意思相当
Boundaries prevented its acoustic energy from dissipating (vi).

我选错了，因为不知道dissipate还有vi，我在找这个选项，但是没有.
...., its acoustic energy prevented from being dissipated by boundaries

用法就像keep sth from being done,

Archaeologists in Ireland believe that a recently discovered chalice, which dates from the eighth century, was probably buried to keep it from being stolen by invaders.

明白了这道题选C

dissipate 解释为消散，是不及物动词，所以A、B、D都错， prevent的施动者是boundaries，所以E错

dissipate可以是VI，使消散的意思
