Round 2 / Alumnus / Off-Campus (Published March 29th, 2010)

My interviewer was extremely upbeat, friendly, and had loved her Anderson experience. We met at a coffee shop and the conversation was very relaxed.

List of interview questions:

Tell me about yourself.
Why Anderson?
Can you describe a difficult/challenging interaction you had at work?
Which personal accomplishment and which professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
Would you consider moving to California after graduation [from NYC]?
What do you think are your application’s greatest strengths? Weaknesses?
What do you like to do for fun?
Is there anything else you’d like the admissions committee to know that wasn’t in your application/that you wish Adcom would have asked?
The interview lasted for over an hour, since the alumnus very much enjoyed chatting about Anderson, what she gained from it, and the alumni network.

Decision: Admitted!

Round 2 / 2nd Year Student / On-Campus (Published February 26th, 2010)

The interview was almost exactly 30 min, done inside an admission officer's office. I didn't get too much feedback from my interviewer, as she was firing off questions to fit within the interview time slot. The questions were fairly standard:

Walk me through your resume
Why MBA, why Anderson, why now?
Tell me a time where you showed leadership
Tell me a time where you worked in a team
Tell me about a time when you received constructive criticism
What will you contribute to the Anderson community?
The interview then concluded with 5 minutes for me to ask her questions about Anderson.

Round 1 / Alum / Off-campus / Originally Shared by The Parisian MBA (Published April 9th, 2009)

My UCLA interview took place at the end of 2008 in a hotel bar with a french UCLA alumnus and lasted for 1h15, 30min in english and the rest in french.

Here is how it went:

When I received the notification I got preselected for an interview, I contacted the selected alumnus and we agreed to make the interview in a place convenient for both of us. As he let me decide the place, I chose a hotel bar in my street where I often saw business people having discussions. When I arrived at the bar, my interviewer was already there, we greeted each other and I ordered some drinks.

It started bad as the bar was only for the hotel residents but I tried to do my most sympathetic smile and the waitress agreed to serve us our drinks. (it's obvious but really make sure what kind of place you choose if you are asked for )

Then my interviewer introduced himself. He was a strategy consultant and was handling a business in parallel. He was very friendly and very open to discussion and therefore I relaxed a bit. He then asked me to introduce myself in english and describe my career to date.

Afterwards he asked me the traditional MBA applicants questions:

Why MBA?
Why now?
What are your goals post-MBA?
Why UCLA?
As it was my first interview, even though I had prepared these questions thoroughly, I felt a bit hesitant at first but then retook the lead and found myself explaining my background, goals and reasons well enough.

He then asked me about challenges I encountered at work. He had prepared the interview well because he asked me some very specific questions and then came a funny anecdote when he mentioned that one of his neighbours was my former CEO .

Then he asked about what other schools I applied to and thought it was a coherent set of applications regarding my goals.

Then he asked me whether I had any questions. I had a lot actually as I had quite similar post-MBA goals to his. Therefore I could ask a lot about Entrepreneurship at Anderson, the AMR program, Visa issues for Internationals and life at LA.

One thing was that my interviewer loved to talk and I felt at that moment I was loosing control over the interview. He was so thrilled about his experience at Anderson that I felt he could have talked about it for days!

The interview finally ended and we said goodbye.

After that I had quite a good feeling but a bit later I wondered whether the laid back style of the interview was not intended to put off my guard. Ok it was laid back but I made sure to be coherent regarding my application file and honest about my goals and potential schools' choices.

I guess it went well as I finally got in for September 2009!

Round 3 / Student / On-campus (Published April 4th, 2009)

I interviewed today with a FEMBA student at UCLA campus. The only question I was not ready for was:

Describe a situation where you had to make an ethical decision.
Also, when you check in for the interview, they give you a pink card. On the front side of the card, you fill out your information. The back of the card is to be filled by the person who interviews you and contains detailed questions on what they liked about you. If you have time, you may want to review the evaluation questions. It may help you take better control of the interview.

Hope this helps the next applicant! =)

Round 2 / Alum / Off-campus (Published February 16th, 2009)

I met my interviewer in his office. Our chat was reasonably short -- less than an hour, I would say. The interview itself was light and extremely conversational. At the end my interviewer talked about his experiences at Anderson for about 10 minutes.

Among the questions he asked me were:

Walk me through your resume.
What do you like about your current job?
What do you do for fun?
Why an MBA?
Why go to business school now?
Why Anderson? What first got you interested in Anderson?
Which other schools did you apply to?
Are you applying to other California schools?
How will you involve yourself in the Anderson community?
Tell me about a book you have read recently.
Any questions for me?

Round 1 / Adcom / On-campus (Published February 12th, 2009)

The interview lasted approximately 40 minutes. It was conducted on campus by a member of the adcom, Jessica Luchenta. She was very nice and the interview went quite well.

The following questions were addressed:

Walk me through your resume.
Why an MBA?
Why Anderson?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
Give me an example of a time you displayed leadership?
Has anyone ever been critical of you in a work setting? How so? What do you now do to avoid doing it again?
Give me an example of when you failed to accomplish an objective?
What types of clubs or organizations would you join at Anderson?
How would you add to the community at Anderson?
This was basically our entire conversation -- with some questions at the end.

Good luck to everyone with interviews!

Round 2 / On-campus / Second-year Student (Published February 11th, 2009)

List of Interview Questions:

Walk me through your resume
Why did you switch jobs? (in reference to my resume)
What are your career goals?
Why do you want an MBA?
Why Anderson?
Tell me about a team experience that didn't go well and what did you learn.
Describe your entrepreneurial ideas? (Relevant to my career goals)
How will you contribute to Anderson?
Commentary: My interviewer was very relaxed and friendly. I enjoyed my visit and was quite impressed with the Anderson campus and facilities, as well as with the students and faculty.

Round 1 / On-campus (Published December 16th, 2008)

Why did you choose your undergraduate position?
Tell me about what you do now?
Why did you choose your current position?
Tell me about your leadership experiences
Elaborate on your career goals.
How will Anderson help you get to your career goals?
What publications have you been following to stay abreast of your career goals?
Do you have any questions for me?

Round 1 / Alum / Off-campus (Published November 23rd, 2008)

Had an interview with an alum off campus at starbucks. Very friendly and relaxed. Questions asked were:

Walk me through your resume
Why Anderson?
Clubs at Anderson?
Questions for the alum
Overall, a good experience. As it was a blind interview ,the interviewer had no idea abt my application. Gave her a copy of my resume at the end of it.

Round 3 / Adcom / On-campus (Published April 28th, 2008)

Had my interview yesterday on campus with Jessica Luchenta. Fairly standard format - it was conversational but not too relaxed. The usual suspects - "Why MBA, why now, why Anderson, teamwork example, challenge you overcame, how has that shaped you, clubs you'd participate in, what would you do for fun etc. outside classwork..." and one that threw me for a minute, "Tell me about a disappointment in your life." She seemed to relate to what I was saying, at least a bit, and clearly appreciated that I had flown out from NY for the interview. She also noted the students that I'd spoken with - I set up an informal chat/lunch for myself w/the current president of the Entertainment Management Association, and obviously she knew the guy quite well. Took a TON of notes.

After lunch, I wandered about the campus taking pictures and sticking my nose into buildings. Students were all very warm and friendly, and the facilities were astonishing. Top of the line stuff. Anderson students I met were a nice combination of ambitious gunners and well-balanced folk.

Round 3 / Alumnus (Published April 28th, 2008)

I interviewed with an Alumnus for 30 mins.He was a recent grad and had no interviewing experience. Since my interview was blind, he was wondering why he did not get my resume beforehand. The interview was fairly straightforward with no curveballs. Anyway, here are the questions:

Give me a 30 second overview of your resume.
Why MBA, Why Anderson?
What was your biggest setback in life?
What was your greatest achievement in your profession?
Tell me about your extracurricular activities, then some follow up questions on my extracurriculars.
He asked me to explain one of the achievements I had mentioned on my resume.
Do you have any questions for me?

Round 2 / On-campus / Adcom / Admitted! (Published April 1st, 2008)

I am a R2 admit to UCLA Anderson, as of 28 March. I interviewed on-campus for Anderson back on 14 February with Jessica Luchenta, an Associate Director of MBA Admissions, and a 1st-year student that was sitting in to learn about giving interviews, as Jessica said this student was going to be assisting Admissions next year with interview prospective students.

The email notifying me of my interview said to bring my resume…I brought three copies with me, and was able to provide the 1st-year a copy (I think this went over well when I offered a copy to the 1st year).

The tone was conversational and started off with the standard "Why an MBA? Why Anderson?" I was able to talk for a while about all my reasons for choosing Anderson, which worked well for me. I have a military background, and used the time to fully relate my military background to my reasons for desiring an Anderson MBA. The interviewer also followed up some more about my military background, and I think I was able to connect with my answers…even though it took some time to explain some things without using military jargon. The interviewers gave me the time to explain myself, and this really helped me communicate my accomplishments and goals.

Other questions they asked included:

What companies are you going to look for internships with?
What area of your management skills do you feel you could most improve upon? (I had a good answer for this because Tuck asked a similar question in this year's essays).
The total interview time was about 35 minutes, along with follow-on time for me to ask questions. I had a few prepped, so I believe I was able to communicate my interest in Anderson this way also, along with getting some more info for my ultimate decision.

Round 2 / On-campus / Second-year Student (Published March 10th, 2008)

I was interviewed by both the associate director of admissions and a 2nd year student, but the whole thing lasted only for half hour. I felt a little rushed overall, but I think I did ok because the questions weren't anything difficult to answer. The questions that I remember:

Describe everything you did that has brought you here
Your career goals
Your extracurricular activities while in college
Briefly describe your extracurricular activities out of college
Why Anderson?
What will you contribute at Anderson?
Describe a challenge that you have overcome.
What do you see as a potential weakness/concern when you study at Anderson?
I remember doing very well in the 2nd half of the interview (why Anderson type questions). I could have been a little more concise with my answers. I too asked a lot of questions about Anderson's AMR program, ability to take courses in other departments, internship opportunities, student clubs, etc. I won't say the interview was 100% conversational. It was a little more formal than that.

Alum, Super Saturday November 2006 (Published November 21, 2006)

My interviewer was an alumni and was very, very nice. She went through most of the basic questions and didn't throw me anything difficult.

take me through your resume

why do you want to do marketing

what do you like about working in teams

why mba, why not just work

what are your extracurriculars

she turned out to be a marketer herself so i had a lot of questions for her. overall the interview was relatively easy--nothing too bad. i imagine most super saturday interviews are this way as it's more of an informational day in general...they don't want you to walk away with a bad experience, it seems...

On campus, Second Year Student. (Published Feb 14, 2006)

I interviewed on campus with a second year student. I had my resume for her and following are her questions for me:

Take me through your resume.
What are your likes and dislikes for your current job?
Tell me about a challenging group situation.
What are your goals?
Why do you want an MBA?
Why now?
Why Anderson?
What are your passions outside of work/business?
Anything else you want to tell me or want to ask me?
I think the interview went well - I don't have a feeling that I bombed it. But, you can't tell because they don't necessarily "bond" with you. But she did react favorably to a couple things I said and seemed interested. I don't think you are supposed to know how it went. The interview was 30 minutes and we actually went slightly over, so that was good. Time flew by - 30 minutes is not much time, so be prepared and get to the point.

Alum, Super Saturday Interview - (Published Jan 28, 2006)

I interviewed on Jan 28th, 2006, a Super Saturday. I interviewed with a recent alum. As others have mentioned, it was a blind interview; I gave my interviewer my resume when I got there. Some questions:

Walk me through your resume (starting with college). This included sub questions like why did you choose your major, why did you make that job transition, what made you interested in that, etc
What are your post-MBA career goals?
What are your two weaknesses? Can you give me examples?
What do you do outside of work?
My interviewer also focused a lot on the “why” questions – why I chose to do X, what made me interested in Y. I thought the interview generally went well, but of course, it’s hard to tell.

My advice would be to: #Know your resume inside and out

Understand your goals clearly
Understand specifically why you need an MBA to achieve your goals (as opposed to going into consulting or staying at your current job, for example)
Understand why you have made the choices you have – be able to weave the story between the pieces on your resume
Good luck!

Alum, Super Saturday (Published Jan 28, 2006)

I interviewed at UCLA as part of Super Saturday before end of Round 2 interview deadline. The day started off with a Information session from 9am - 10am. The adcom mentioned that there were a lot of people interviewing on the day and all the interviews will be conducted by either alumni or students. After the information session, we were asked to hang around the admissions office where first year students were available to mingle with us and answer any questions. I think this was a nice touch by the school to help the applicants to learn more about the program and also relax before the interview. The students also offered impromptu school tours. I have visited the campus before and highly recommend sitting in a class and talking to students to get a better idea of the program and students.

My interviewer was an alum and was very friendly. I was asked to go over my Resume and cover the "why's" behind some important decisions I took. Then came the "Why MBA/now" followed by "Why Anderson and how it fits into my goals". Next, I was asked a couple of questions on team situations and how I handled it. Then, I was asked about outside interests before wrapping up with Questions for the interviewer. Since there are a series of interviews, staying on schedule was important and I think mine was right around 30 mts. I didn't get any feedback or clues on how I did (maybe I didn't do well), but it was very casual and straight forward questions with no curveballs. My interactions with the students, alumni and the adcom have been wonderful and I think Anderson is a great place. Waiting for good news

Interview with Adcom, R2 (Published January 2006)

The following is a brief summary of my interview and visit experience: The UCLA campus is beautiful and Anderson in particular has a very new, and beautiful facility. The class I sat in on focused on was excellent and the students seemed more knowledgeable and accomplished than those at schools with higher rankings that i visited. I was very impressed. The interview is a 1/2 hour interview with one of four associate admissions directors. The main focus of the interview covered the following two questions:

Please explain your resume and work history to me.
Why is Anderson so appealing to you?
Defintely attend a class, the quality of teaching appears to be excellent. The students are all remarkably friendly. The environment seems very collaborative.

Anderson On-Campus Super Saturday Interview - R1 - November 2005

My interview was scheduled for 10:30 and after getting a little lost on campus I finally found the Anderson buildings. I loved that there were a few first year students greeting the applicants and answering questions. It made me feel more at ease and connected to the current students. I am not sure how much I should write about my actual interview because I honestly cannot figure out how it went. It was one of those not great, but not bad either experiences. I didn't really get the sense that my interviewer (a second year) was thrilled with me, nor did she seem to hate me. Having never seen my resume before she asked me to go through it - which I did pretty fast, though touching on all the points I wanted to make. She asked me why I left my first job for the current one, why MBA now, why Anderson, and how did I get to be fluent in French. That was it pretty much. I didn't look at the time when we were done, but I doubt I was in there for more then 30 minutes, possibly even less.

Anderson on-campus interview, Monday October 9, 2005

My interview was originally scheduled with Wesley Hawk, but I ended up interviewing with Craig Hubble instead. He was very laid-back and friendly, and although I was very nervous walking into the interview (this was my first one), I felt at ease once we started talking. He asked about my professional background and number of years of work experience. He also asked about my extra-curricular activities while in college, and what sort of community service work I've done since school. He seemed to steer the conversation frequently towards "Why Anderson?" types of information, which I was more than happy to answer. He also asked the standard "why do you want an MBA?" question. About thirty minutes passed before he asked "ok do you have any questions?" and I asked him if he was an alum and about his experiences at Anderson, and also got in a few more points about why I wanted to attend the school. Overall the interview was very straight-forward and he didn't try to throw any curveballs at me. The entire interview lasted 45 minutes.

UCLA
1,go through resume
2, why MBA, why anderson
3, career plan
4, leadership experience
5, Strength
6, most hard decison
7,Q for him

我说有,但是我觉得face to face is the best way to learn whether we are the best fit. 他非常appreciated
1, could you introduce yourself?
2, why US?
3, tell me a teamwork experience?
4, Why mba and why Anderson?
5,tell me about your failure?
7,any questions for me?
I mean mainland China applicant, they are the future for China.

Woo!Wharton is great school 我说true,并说hope he can come back to China to see what happen now。

UCLA Anderson MBA 2010

why MBA?
short term long term goal?
why Anderson?
challenge?

UCLA R2

introduce myself, discuss my career path, why MBA, future plan
how do I like my job, what responsibility
desired work after MBA, which companies do I know are in this area, how do they work, why do you like the work, what disadvantage do you have in applying a job there, why do you think you can do well there........
why quit the current company?
leadership story
strengths
how will I spend the two years in UCLA?
how do I like the school?
why the school should admit me?
hobbies
anything I want to say / ask?

UCLA Anderson MBA off-campus interview (3/15)

1) Briefly go through your resume.
2) Why MBA? why now?
3) why Anderson?
4) Leadership style?
5) Failure experience?
6) Q and A

UCLA MBA off-campus interview (3-6)

R2 decision release date

(1) Why MBA? Why now?
(2) Why Anderson? Why CA and why LA?
(3) What's your career goal? (short-term and long-term)
(4) What club do you want to attend?
(5) How do you see the role of 'networking' in the two years of MBA life?
(6) How would people describe you?
(7) What's your personal strength and uniqueness that could contribute to the student body?
(8) What's your weakness?
(9) What's your leadership style? Give me a story.
(10) In a group, do you tend to be a leader or a follower? Why?
(11) What are your hobbies?
(12) Have you ever discussed your MBA plan with your supervisor? How did they respond?
(13) Talk about your internship experience at college.
(14) Talk about your career switch. What's the difference between the role in job A and job B and which one do you like better?
(15) Other programs you apply to?
(16) Some detail follow-up and specific questions in my essays (around 5-6 questions)
(17) Questions for the alum.

12/10 UCLA Anderson MBA

因为刚刚有一个职业上的转变,校友也就此处提出问题,why the change and why MBA so soon after the change.

后来,在一个比较宽松的聊天环境下,也谈到了why mba, why ucla, why now. what's the most significant accomplishment in your career so far.

R2 Interview @ UCLA, Feb 25

tell me about yourself
why MBA? why now? why Anderson?
no tricky question at all.

1. what's your date of birth?

2. what's your phone number?

3. what's your home address?

1.Please go over your resume and describe your career path

2. What's your career goal?

3. What do you want to do after getting your MBA degree?

4. Why MBA? Why Anderson?

5. I noticed you have xxx experience in your resume. I find that very interesting. Can you tell me some more? What's your role?

6. How do you work in teams?

7. Q&A

1. What's your experience so far?

2. What's your most challenging project?

3. What are your goals in 5 or 10 years?

4. Why do you want to pursue an MBA at Anderson now?

5. Any questions to them?
