答案给的E, 为什么D不对呢

而且to do 不是有目的的含义在里面吗,这个气囊引爆应该是一个突发事件不带有make passenger think the car was on fire这层目的吧?

烟和带来假象没有目的关系

只有两种关系，要么并列关系，也就是 would appear... and (would) make

要么就是伴随结果关系，would appear...., making...这种烟出现造成了什么什么的结果

假如E是正确答案，那么代入后半句为a burst of smoke would appear when the bag inflated to make an already terrified passenger think the car was on fire.这样可翻译为当气囊膨胀使乘客想起汽车着火的时候，一股烟将会冲出来。试想，气囊的膨胀怎么会使乘客想起汽车着火呢？

当然是D答案代入后句子翻译为“当气囊膨胀时，一股烟将会冲出来并使乘客想起汽车着火”。

觉得还是应该选择D,因为如果选择E,

则为 eliminated the possibility that a burst of smoke would appear when the bag inflated to make an already terrified passenger think the car was on fire.

那整个When后面都变成了When引导的，修饰a burst of smoke would appear 的时间状语了，可以翻译为，消除了这样一个possibiity,即当气囊膨胀使得本来已受到惊吓的乘客认为着火的时候，the burst of smoke would appear。 

而复合逻辑的意思应该是，气囊膨胀时候冒烟，这个冒烟使得乘客认为着火。

还是认为D是合理的。即the burst of smoke would appear when the bag inflated and (would) make an already terrified passenger think the car was on fire.
