用排除法?
A,B中it没有logical referent
C中them容易产生歧义,是指settler, mud and grass or homes???
E do与were不对称,而且the passive voice is awkward here

这题我也会用排除法做。A和B中的it明显错误。E中making的逻辑主语变成homes,错误。c与d相比，d中without比较简洁（btw:发现ets比较喜欢without这个词，每出每中，当然并没有严格验证过）。

make do
to manage with the things that you have, even though this is not really enough

make do with/without
I usually make do with a cup of coffee for breakfast.
For many people, make do and mend (=when someone manages with the things they have and does not buy anything new) was a harsh reality.

都是“将就“的意思，不过一个是凑和着过的将就，一个是无米之炊的将就

make do and mend修补一下对付使用

make do (with)凑合着用; 用...勉强对付

make do without在没有...的情况下, 设法应付过去
