The correct answer is D.
问题是double做什么？是谓语？时态为什么用原形？还有为什么用figure for 1977而不是figure of？
如果句子改为twice as many as it was in 1977是否正确？
该题用排除法比较好做，A。B。E应该很好排除，C中的it没有任何指代，也不对，所以只有D了。。。另外，double这里应该是形容词，也不能改为twice as many as it was in 1977，因为it仍然没有明确的指代。
至于figure for 1977或figure of应该都可以吧。
double 是形容词，修饰the figure. 这里是句末的独立主格。
至于for 和 Of ，我个人觉得是习惯用法的问题。而且一般传说GMAT是不考介词用法
的，也就是说题目选项可以不通过介词用法排除出来。
twice as many as it was in 1977 是OK的，这就形成了完整的比较结构。但是比较
起来，不是不简洁么？

改为twice as many as it was in 1977应该不对吧~因为it指代不清~
所以这里的C也就不对啦~
个人认为应该把almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy这个插入语去掉来读，
就会清晰很多~
变成 there were 20736 female ministers, double the figure for 1977.
另外，PREP语法笔记上说immune from 和immune to 都对，GMAC不考介词用法，所以
这个for的问题LZ不用急哈~
