XDF-S7-T24, in the structure “Subject cause noun/pronoun to do sth. ” is “to do ” adverbial modifier or object of the verb "cause"?
24. Several years ago the diet industry introduced a variety of appetite suppressants, but some of these drugs caused stomach disorders severe enough to have them banned by the Food and Drug Administration.
(A) stomach disorders severe enough to have them
(B) stomach disorders that were severe enough so they were
(C) stomach disorders of such severity so as to be
(D) such severe stomach disorders that they were
(E) such severe stomach disorders as to be
The answer is D.
But what about A?
Someone think A is wrong and explains as follows.
since
In the structre "Subject cause noun/pronoun to do sth ",
"to do sth " is the adverbial modifier of the verb "cause",
and the logic subject of "to do sth." is the subject of the "cause", "Subject";
Then,
in A
"drugs caused stomach disorders severe enough to have them banned "
can be rewritten to
"drugs caused stomach disorders severe enough to (logic subject:drugs)have *drugs* banned "
The logical meaning of the above sentence is not right.
Thus A is wrong.
But I don't think so.
I think A is correct and my reason is as follows.
Since
In the structure "Subject cause noun/pronoun to do sth" ,
both "noun/pronoun" and "to do sth " are the objects of the verb "cause " ,
and the logic subject of "to do sth" is "noun/pronoun";
Then,
in A
"drugs caused stomach disorders severe enough to have them banned "
can be rewritten to
"drugs caused stomach disorders severe enough to (logic subject:stomach disorders) have *drugs* banned"
both the logical meaning and the gramma of the above sentence is right.
Thus A is OK.
So my questions are
In the structre"Subject cause noun/pronoun to do sth ",
is "to do " the adverbial modifier or the object of the verb"cause"?
and which one is the logc subject of "to do ", "subject " or "noun/pronoun"?
and
What's wrong with A?
Can any NN help answer the questions above? Thanks in advance.作者: atongmu 时间: 2003-9-8 15:30
不是很明白你的问题,不过我认为A错的原因是主句的主语the drugs不能担当不定式to have them banned by the Food and Drug Administration的主语。作者: uclb5550 时间: 2003-9-8 18:51
Can stomach disorders ban sth ? Can they exert such a function? The question is same to drugs. Can they ban themselves? Only regulatory organization can do the job. So, A is wrong. D provides the most idiomatic way of saying (such that) for the sentence and makes the logic subject (word "they" refers to drugs) unerring.作者: isuffering 时间: 2003-9-9 16:02
我清楚了.
楼上两位, 谢谢.
