动词+ING形式的用法请教

我一般做这种类型大多凭感觉.不知道有没有关于动词+ING形式作定语,做伴随,做...的用法总结.
我举个例子吧.
Selling several hundred thousand copies in 6 monthes, the "Maple Leaf Rag" was published in 1899, helping establish Scott as the preeminent ragtime composer.
这里的selling and helping用的是否正确?
印象中ING形式修饰主句中的主语颇多,有没有放在主句之前之后的讲究? 能不能修饰主句中的宾语?如果主句有两个以上的名词可被ING形式所修饰, ING形式离所修饰的词距离的远近会不回产生指带不清?

1、这个selling 应该是selled 吧。应该是被动形式比较好些。
2、后面的helping 指伴随。
3、没有逗号相间隔，就近修饰。

SELL肯定用主动形式，这时我错了好几回总结出来的．

5. This tool is designed by Tom, making his job much easier.
