“Hi guys,
I got a lot of emails to ask the job searching skill. In fact I do not know
what the good skills are. I will share my expereinces and lessons to you. And
i also express my point of view on the job searching for OPT guys. If i am
wrong, please point it out and share yours with us.
Experinces is the most important thing. If you are experienced enough, you
can get a job in this tough time without any job searching skills. However most
of us, include me are not so experienced in USA. Some company do not admit my
experince in China. We are MS/Ph.D graduate from last year or the coming year.
So how to let your employer know you are experinced enough, you can get the
job done is the most important. My advices are:
(1) if your are a new graduate in this May/August, stay at your university,
do not come out, at least delay one semester, then apply your OPT. 6 months
will be great helpful to economic to come up. You can search your job in
University, if they ask you when you are available, you can say if you get the
offer, you can start your job very soon. How this come? Use your CPT, CPT is
very easy to get, only by approved by your professer and OIS in your
college. That means you use intern/CPT, not OPT. When I lost my job last Sept,
it is too hard to get an phone interview. However I got a lot of phone
interview in this march. You can see this is the difference for 6 months.
(2) if you are OPT , but laid off, you can apply for your Ph.D or Post Doc
position in University as well as search job in industrial.
(3) emphasis on your industrial experiences, not your academic background in
college even you are a post doc. So I suggest you can change your project done
in your undegraduate and graduate study in china to be done in a company of
china. It is helpful. Of course you also can change your USA college project
to an USA company, the thing is you should provide a referer to confirm that.
Can you? However, for China, it is not a easy thing to do that. Because your
employer can not check it in China.
(4) Your resume should list your experinces in detail. Than means
what project you did,
what part is your design,
what is your duty?
Morw detail, better, more professional, better!
For different job, you should modify your resume to that specific job. Not
one resume for all job. this is a very tedious work to do.
(5) you can post your resume on Hotjobs, headhunter, Monster, Dice,
Brassring and etc. You should update your resume frequently, and place more
keywords on it. You should search the job actively and send your resume to
them directly, not only waiting for the feedback. It is too passive.
(6) if the employer list a FAX number, you should fax them your resume, and
send them email too. Some email only transfer to an automatic database, even
no body review it.
(6) local newspaper and friends reccomand is also helpful Especially your
friends is very high and influent.
(7) Good english is also very important. Express your idea clearly and
answer the question just to the point is very important.
(8)use your most strong background to apply for a job, not apply for a job,
you only match less than a half requirements. It is very frustrate for you if
you failed it again again. In fact it is not your job.
(9) Wear suit in your on-site interview.
(10) For every time interview, prepare your knowledge for that one, read
some your textbook and the job material you have done. It is very important.
Once I get a interview, they ask me something detail on PCI bus. However PCI
bus job is the thing one year ago. I did not review it before my interview. So
I lost that question and lost that job.
Just these things. If I remember more, I will post it later.
Good Luck for every body! |
